Job Description - Detective Sergeant - Major Crime Unit - Investigative Services Division (Internal Only) 2026/27
This Job Posting is for one Detective Sergeant Positions within the Investigational Services Division - the successful applicant will be assigned to the Major Crime Unit (MCU).
MCU Sergeants lead teams of a specialized detectives to conduct risk-based and evidence-focused investigations. Detective Sergeants supervise, assign, review work, and manage team members. Detective Sergeants are proven leaders with advanced skills conducting major crime investigations including serious assaults, sexual assaults, financial crimes, robberies, homicides and other major crimes. Detective Sergeants work collaboratively with VIIMCU and the IIO as required.
Job Description:
Primarily a plain clothes position working 10 hour shifts
Included in the regular ISD on-call rotation
Willing to work overtime when there is an investigational or operational need
Supervise and lead investigative teams to conduct complex investigations
Conduct file review and maintain work queues
Audit files as required
Apply ISD Business Rules
Build and maintain relationships with victims, witnesses and accused persons
Build and maintain relationships with community partners and work collaboratively with partners and external agencies
Oversee specialized portfolios within the Division
Work proficiently in the Major Case Management environment, including the Primary Investigator, File Coordinator and Team Commander roles
Coordinate the appropriate release of investigative information through the Community Engagement Division
Perform acting Staff Sergeant duties as required
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise complex investigations
Demonstrated ability to mentor others in complex investigations, and effectively manage teams
Demonstrated experience supervising Major Case investigations
Demonstrated ability to proactively drive investigations forward, even when progress has slowed or obstacles arise
Supervisory level knowledge of MCM principles with demonstrated FC, PI and TC experience
Supervisory level affiant and interview skills
Knowledge and experience with Non-conventional Investigative Techniques
Fundamental understanding of the Crown/Police Disclosure MOU and Electronic Disclosure processes
Ability to multi-task and work effectively under compressed timelines
Advanced risk management and threat assessment skills
