Job Description - Diesel/Truck Mechanic

YOUR ROLE

The Diesel Truck Mechanic installs, maintains, tests and repairs the mechanical parts of trucks such as diesel engine, transmission, suspensions, steering and brakes. The Diesel Truck Mechanic maintains diesel equipment operation bycompleting inspections and preventive maintenance requirements, such ascorrecting vehicle deficiencies, making adjustments and alignments, and keepingrecords.

Note: This Job Description may not encompass the entire scopeof this role, as other duties maybe assigned by management.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts;
  • Keeps equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules such as installing component and part upgrades, controlling corrosion, completing winterization procedures, etc.;
  • Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel and emissions, brakes, steering, and hydraulics;
  • Completes machine shop operations by making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches and traction units;
  • Verifies vehicle performance by conducting test drives and by adjusting controls and systems;
  • Complies with federal and provincial vehicle requirements;
  • Maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing and painting;
  • Maintains vehicle records by annotating services and repairs;
  • Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs;
  • Assists other mechanics with the more difficult assignments;
  • Performs layout work for fabrication of parts and equipment;
  • Performs other related work as required.
  • POSITIONREQUIREMENTS

    Education& Experience

  • High School graduation required;
  • Diploma of Professional Studies in automotive mechanic/diesel mechanic preferred;
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the repair and maintenance of diesel automotive / vehicular equipment;
  • 3 years’ experience of which must have specifically involved the repair of trucks or other heavy automotive equipment;
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License required.
  • Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of tools and equipment needed for the overhaul, repair and maintenance of heavy diesel equipment;
  • Ability to keep records of repairs, time and parts used for the servicing of heavy, special purpose automotive equipment, and to make related reports;
  • Skill in the use of instruments and tools employed in the checking and repair of motors and special equipment;
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude, coordination and dexterity.
  • PHYSICAL & OTHER ABILITIES

  • Regularly be requiredto stand; use hands to finger, handle or feel; talk or hear; and smell;
  • Will frequently be requiredto walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and occasionally sit, reach with handsand arms and climb or balance;
  • Must be capable of heavy lifting and moving parts upto 50 lbs on a consistent basis;
  • Must able to work on your feet (stand or walk) for entireassigned work shift;
  • Driving motor vehicles and heavy equipment is occasionally required;
  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate equipment;
  • Specific visual abilities required for this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Proven communication skills both Written and Verbal (English& French);
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a solid team environment;
  • Ability to establish effective working relationshipswith employees and supervisors;
  • Ability to work efficiently;
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment;
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
