About Africa Centre

Africa Centre is Western Canada's largest pan-African nonprofit organization creating opportunities for access and full participation of the African descent community in Alberta. We support seniors and their families in Edmonton and Calgary as we strive to create inclusive, culturally responsive learning spaces that reduce social isolation and enhance quality of life for older African adults.



The Role

We seek a compassionate and preferably  certified Alberta teacher to design and deliver simplified digital skills training for older adults of African, Caribbean and Black descent oftentimes with limited English proficiency. Using a holistic, culturally aware approach, you'll teach practical everyday technology skills that directly improve participants' independence, safety, and connection to their communities.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and deliver accessible digital skills curriculum focused on real-world applications (email, video calls with family, online banking, health appointments, community resources, smart phone management)
- Create a welcoming, judgment-free learning environment that honors cultural backgrounds and individual learning paces
- Accommodate language barriers through clear communication, visual demonstrations, and modified materials
- Provide one-on-one support tailored to individual needs and learning styles
- Lead with empathy, patience, and a strength-based approach to adult learning
- Administer pre/post assessments and maintain accurate learner records and overall data collection to support program evaluation.
- Collaborate with program lead to connect participants with additional support services


What You Bring

  - Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate or equivalent (preferable)
- Demonstrated experience teaching or supporting adults with language barriers
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, email, video conferencing, and online shopping.
- Strong facilitation skills in diverse, multicultural settings
- Commitment to culturally humble and holistic learning approaches
- Valid Security Clearance
Ideal Candidate:
- Retired teacher or educator with adult education teaching experience
- Familiarity with African Canadian communities and their unique needs
- Background in social work, ESL/LINC, or adult education
- Additional language skills (asset)
- Experience adapting curriculum for diverse learners
Position Details
-Duration: 18 months 
- Schedule: 10 hours/week (8 hours instruction + 2 hours prep)
- Compensation:$350/week
