This position is part of the Nation’s succession planning and capacity-building efforts to strengthen self-determination and Indigenous-led health and wellness governance.

Organizational Status

The Haisla Nation is the band government of the Haisla people. Our mission is to build a powerful, prosperous and proud community, healthy in mind, body and spirit. We believe in building a strong and thriving community, with healthy and happy members and a sustained and prosperous environment. We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.

The Health and Wellness department enhances the overall health and well-being of the Haisla Nation community by providing integrated, culturally respectful healthcare and wellness services that address the physical, mental, emotional, and social needs of all members.

Duties & Responsibilities

Training and Development:

  • Engage in a structured training plan developed in collaboration with the Director and Executive Director, Community Services.

  • Shadow the Director to gain exposure to strategic planning, management meetings, and intergovernmental/agency partnerships.

  • Participate in external training, certification programs, and mentorship opportunities to build knowledge in health administration, leadership, and Indigenous wellness models.

  • Learn and apply the Haisla Nation’s governance systems, cultural protocols, and traditional health perspectives in the delivery of services.

Leadership Support:

  • Assist with the planning, development, and monitoring of programs and services delivered by the Health & Wellness department.

  • Collaborate with the Managers of Clinical Health and Community Wellness to support program delivery, evaluation, and improvement initiatives.

  • Attend internal and external meetings alongside the Director to observe and gradually take on leadership in presentations, negotiations, and interagency relations.

Operational Support:

  • Support departmental reporting, policy development, budgeting processes, and risk management efforts.

  • Assist with the preparation of annual operational and strategic plans, including data collection and community feedback.

  • Help monitor departmental performance and contribute to service improvements grounded in holistic, trauma-informed, and culturally appropriate care.

People Development:

  • Participate in HR processes such as recruitment, staff development, and performance management under the guidance of the Director.

  • Foster strong professional relationships with department staff and act as a resource and mentor as readiness develops.

  • Model respectful communication, accountability, and culturally rooted leadership in all workplace interactions.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Must be a registered Haisla member.

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Health or Health Administration, Social Work, Indigenous Governance, or a related field (or working towards one).

  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in health or social service roles, preferably within Indigenous organizations or communities.

  • Demonstrated commitment to Haisla values, culture, and community wellness.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
