Job Description - Director of People (Canada)

The Director of People, reporting to the Vice President of People, will serve as a strategic partner responsible for overseeing people operations in Canada. This role will primarily focus on managing union-related activities and will actively engage in various human resources functions including wage/hour, employee relations, safety, labor/employment, union compliance, new unit openings, talent acquisition, retention, benefits, and training/development/performance management. The Director of People will work hands-on to ensure expectations are met and maintain a deep involvement in all HR operations.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Work in a hands-on capacity, lead expectations and remain intimately involved in all human resources for the Canadian regions (e.g., wage/hour, employee relations, safety, labor/employment, union compliance, new unit openings, talent acquisition, retention, benefits, training/development/performance management, etc.).
  • Will act as the primary liaison for all union-related activity.
  • Advises leadership on solutions for human resources issues and evolving organizational needs.
  • Administers human resources programs and policies to reflect the organization's mission and values, supporting company goals, achieving objectives, and positively engaging the workforce.
  • Investigates and resolves complex or high exposure employee relations issues and concerns regarding employment practices.
  • Drives an agenda to create an environment of employee empowerment, continuous improvement, and innovation, supporting initiatives to build cross functional business continuity, effectively embracing and encouraging the unique perspectives, experiences, and contributions of a diverse and resilient team.
  • Hires and directs actions of others, effectively assessing performance of direct reports, clearly outlining required corrective actions, and setting expectations for accountability.
  • Builds effective relationships with all stakeholders to build and sustain high performing teams, setting an example and providing guidelines for team members. Looks for and creates situations that foster others’ development.
  • Delivers all work in support of employee well-being, occupational health, safety and security, and business continuity planning.

 Qualifications – Education, Experience, Skills, and Other Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) required in human resources or another related field. 
  • Minimum ten (10) years’ HR business partner experience in progressive HR-role delivering results in a similar corporate position, preferably in the hospitality, food service/food and beverage, restaurant, or airport industry. 
  • Union experience required.
  • Preference for Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation demonstrating mastery of the practical, technical, and operational aspects of human resource management.
  • Must be technically proficient in application of Canadian labor and employment laws. US expertise a plus.
  • Required to have specific experience with people operations supporting merger and acquisition events and such as preopening/opening/post opening stages of new/remodeled food and beverage operation(s). 
  • Effectively manage conflict situations leading to successful outcomes.
  • Diagnose, and influence business challenges to execute and lead others through ambiguity and complexity by establishing clarity/alignment between individual and team performance.
  • Dynamic and positive attitude to support our PASSION culture and work environment and foster positive working relationships with others in the organization.
  • Demonstrated intermediate to advanced level technical competence and experience with Windows operating system and Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word, and PowerPoint). Aptitude to learn SuccessFactors, and other HR apps.
  • Must be comfortable working in a large-scale, enterprise level digital and physical environment. 
  • Must be able to establish and maintain eligibility to work in Canada without sponsorship.
  • Must be able to travel and perform work <50% within Canada and the US as needed. If required, SSP to support a USA work authorization.
  • Must be able to pass and maintain a criminal background check, and as required a Canadian and USA background check (e.g., Transportation Security Administration (TSA) clearance, comprehensive Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transport Canada, etc.).
