Program Overview
Turning Point Youth Services (TPYS) is an accredited, non-profit agency serving youth (12 to 24 years of age) and their families in the east end of Toronto. Turning Point’s mission is to empower youth to make positive change, an to accomplish this, it offers a continuum of services for youth and their families with a focus on mental health, housing/sheltering, and youth justice. Turning Point Youth Services and WoodGreen Community Services announced on July 2, 2024 the integration of the two organizations. The combination of these two agencies will enable a more effective and integrated approach to the provision of comprehensive support services for youth in the GTA.

This specialized position offers participating students, who are current clients of the Agency or community clients, the opportunity to learn in a safe, structured environment that includes therapeutic care and support.  The eventual goal is to further academic progress.  The Education Worker provides direct, quality care to the students, assists in the classroom and liaises with schoolboard staff, and other external agency staff.  The staff filling this position must have the ability to assist children and youth with their academic needs.  Where needed, the Education Worker will be required to transport youth to and from the live-in program.  The Education Worker will be required to work shift work during school holiday periods in the live-in program.

What You Will Do
  • Incorporate in your work a strengths-based relationship-based philosophy of care and a belief in the resilience of youth.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions to facilitate change and help ensure success within the classroom and education system.
  • Develop and monitor educational and behavioural goal plans for clients
  • Facilitate admission and integration of students into mainstream schools.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate and fully participate in life skills and recreational programming.
  • Transport clients between the live-in program and the school program.
  • Ensure that administrative duties and client records are completed within required timeframes.
  • Assume the role of a congregate care program Youth Worker during school holiday periods.
  • Perform other duties as required.

What You Bring to the Team
  • University or College Degree/Diploma in Child and Youth Work and/or Bachelor of Social Work,
  • At least three years relevant work experience, preferably in a congregate care and/or an educational setting.
  • Understanding of the complex issues and challenges facing our clients.
  • Able to work effectively independently and as part of multiple teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written.
  • Effective program and group facilitation skills.
  • Strong administrative, organizational and computer skills.
  • Valid “Understanding and Managing Aggressive Behaviour” certification.
  • Valid “First Aid/CPR” certification.
  • Completion of required suicide prevention and intervention training.
  • Valid G Drivers’ License with clear and approved drivers abstract.

  • Ability to demonstrate an anti-oppression approach to practice and work from a client-centered, anti-racism, harm reduction, and trauma informed approach is required.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of issues affecting marginalized communities, policies, legislation, programs, and other issues related to scope of practice and social determinants of health.
  • Experience working with diverse and marginalized communities, including ethno-cultural and religious groups, LGBTQSS+ youth and youth adults, those impacted by poverty and those involved in youth justice.
