Position Overview | |
An Elementary homeroom teacher is responsible for the day-to-day operation, management and teaching of a Grade 3 or 4 homeroom at STS. As such, the teacher is responsible for fostering positive relationships with students; providing differentiated learning tasks; fostering and promoting literacy and numeracy; creating an appropriate and engaging classroom environment; implementing transdisciplinary and authentic learning experiences; and providing positive and effective assessments. The successful candidate(s) will be a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and innovative teacher who appreciates working in a collaborative environment. The candidate will also have a strong understanding of the Alberta Program of Studies. A knowledge of and/or training in the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an asset. To be successful in a technology-rich environment, candidates should have experience using technology to support student learning. The successful candidate must have an Alberta teaching certificate or be eligible to obtain one. Ideally, they will have experience in Grades 3-4. | |
Core Areas of Responsibility | |
· Ensure the safety and well-being of our students in accordance with STS procedures and policies. · Understand and implement the Mission and Vision of the School. · Model the Learner Profile of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). · Collaborate with school administration, team partner, specialist teachers, Division 1 Learning Community, Learning Leaders, and the PYP Coordinator in the on-going development and implementation of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Alberta Program of Studies. · Deliver a literacy and numeracy program based on current research for best practice. · Create a supportive learning environment for students that encourages inquiry and offers opportunities to develop the qualities of the Learner Profile. · Utilize a variety of effective teaching, classroom management, and assessment practices in support of student achievement. · Conduct formative and summative assessment of students, communicate growth and achievement to parents. · Understand each student’s learning abilities and apply diverse learning experiences and strategies to support their learning. · Maintain effective communication with parents, colleagues, and students. · Facilitate developmentally appropriate and integrated technology (i.e. Learning management system Toddle, Google Classroom, Microsoft Office, etc.). · Participate in the co-curricular program and special events. · Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity and recognize equity and inclusivity as the foundations to prepare each student for lifelong success. | |
Qualifications and Experience | |
· Experience in a K-6 School with focus on Grades 3-4. · Knowledge of the Alberta Program of Studies. · Knowledge of Alberta Education requirements for maintaining documentation for accommodations. · Knowledge of IB/PYP requirements. · Understanding of best practices for learners in literacy and numeracy (utilization of diagnostic testing for reading, benchmark assessments, differentiation for math, science of reading (UFLI), etc.). · Develop trusting relationships with students, parents and colleagues. · Knowledge of current educational research on optimal learning. · Strong planner, organizer, and communicator. · Work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders. · Self-motivated and detail-oriented, adaptable to changing priorities and procedures. · Ability to work with, and plan for, an Education Assistant. · Demonstrate and uphold a commitment to occupational health and safety. | |

· Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and reflection to refine teaching practice. · Engage in ongoing professional learning. · Stay up-to-date regarding educational research about how students learn and factors that influence students’ learning and achievement. | |
