Job Description - Elementary Teacher

We are looking for two qualified and enthusiastic Elementary Grade Teachers to join our team. This is your opportunity to join our creative and caring team of educators in the beautiful Tl'azt'en Nation and contribute to the community.



  • Grade 2/3 Elementary Teacher

  • Grade 6/7 Elementary Teacher


Eugene Joseph Elementary School (EJES) is an educational institution deeply rooted in the cultural heritage and values of the Tl’azt’en Nation.   • The Teacher will be provided with subsidized housing within Tl’azt’en Nation which is a ten-minute walk from the school, and the town of Fort St James is approximately a 45-minute drive away.

  • Locally, our team can enjoy recreation opportunities including hiking, camping, kayaking on Stuart Lake, and skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing all winter. We are very well connected to many exciting outdoor adventure opportunities. Prince George is only a 2.5 hour drive away with many daily flights to Vancouver and other destinations.

Position Overview: We are seeking passionate and dedicated Elementary Grade Teachers to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction that aligns with the British Columbia curriculum and other programs as directed by the Principal. As a Teacher, you will play a pivotal role in empowering students to achieve their full potential. Teachers are further responsible for implementing the Individualized Education Plans of their students, with the support of the Special Education Teacher.


The Elementary Grade Teacher is expected to demonstrate the following professional dispositions which are defined here as the values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence an educator’s approach to their work. Tl’azt’en Nation expects our educators to demonstrate the following dispositions;

  • Commitment to ongoing professional learning for the purpose of strengthening student learning

Key Responsibilities:



  • Establishing and promoting high standards and expectations for all students for academic performance and behaviour.

  • Managing, evaluating and implementing effective and clear procedures for classroom instruction, routines and structure, and behaviour that is consistent with the culture of the school and the community.

  • Supervising and coaching Educational Assistants.

  • Supervising students in-class, during recess, on field trips, and other times as required.

  • Creation of fair and curriculum-supported practices for the evaluation of student work formally and informally, including recordkeeping and calculating grades, when not otherwise provided with such.

  • Complete a report card for each of their students each semester – to be provided to the Principal for review by a pre-set date.

  • Establishing professional rapport and building respect with students, staff, parents, and the community by displaying a high level of professionalism and ethics.

  • Keeping the Principal advised of pertinent issues.

  • Ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all students, and creating and maintaining an attractive, organized, clean and functional classroom and learning environment.

  • Maintaining visibility with students, parents, Education Advisory Committee, Chief and Council, and the community.

  • Participating in school and community activities and extracurricular activities.

  • Working collaboratively with organizations such as the FNSA and FNESC representatives, specialists, and coaches, that support our school and students.

  • Participating in staff and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.

  • Advocating for special education in our school and community when necessary.

  • Completing other duties as assigned within the same scope and job level.


Qualifications:



  • Bachelor of Education

  • Possess or be eligible for a British Columbia Teaching Certificate

  • Training and recent successful experience teaching both literacy and numeracy knowledge and skills in a variety of curriculum areas at the elementary grade level.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a positive classroom learning environment that engages students in active learning experiences.

  • Experience in differentiating instruction to create success in learning for each student.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Experience in integrating appropriate technologies into instructional practices in order to improve learning outcomes for students.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

  • Commitment to ongoing professional growth and learning.

Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract


Pay: $55,185.00-$105,257.00 per year
