Job Description - Employment Counsellor, BYEP

POSITION TYPE: Full Time Contract >6 months


DEPARTMENT: Programs  


AFFILIATION: Unionized Position


LOCATION: Scarborough, ON


HOURS: Mon-Fri, 7 hours per day 


EXTENDED HOURS: Dependent on needs of the program



ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION 


Tropicana Community Services, a Toronto-based multiservice organization, provides all youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage and others in need with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices. Our mission is achieved through culturally appropriate programs such as counselling, childcare, educational, and employment services and youth development.



ABOUT THE POSITION


The Employment Counsellor will lead participant career navigation and employment readiness within the Black Youth Empowerment Project (BYEP), supporting Black youth aged 16–24 to access meaningful employment, education, and entrepreneurship pathways.


 


This role is responsible for delivering individualized coaching, facilitating employment readiness training, supporting job placements, and coordinating entrepreneurship and financial literacy workshops. The Employment Counsellor will leverage AI-enabled career tools and labour market insights to enhance participant outcomes and ensure alignment with program targets.



AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY


Career Coaching & Employment Readiness



  • Provide one-on-one career counselling and coaching to participants

  • Support participants in developing individualized employment, education, or entrepreneurship plans

  • Deliver workshops on:

    • Resume and cover letter development (including AI-supported tools)

    • Interview preparation (including mock interviews and virtual simulations)

    • Workplace communication and professionalism




 


Job Placement & Employer Engagement



  • Support participants in job search strategies, applications, and interview follow-ups

  • Build relationships with employers to identify job placement opportunities

  • Coordinate job matching and placement support for participants



Entrepreneurship & Financial Readiness



  • Organize and facilitate workshops on entrepreneurship and self-employment pathways

  • Collaborate with facilitators and partners to deliver financial literacy sessions

  • Support participants in exploring business ideas and economic opportunities



Digital & AI-Enabled Career Navigation



  • Guide participants in using AI-powered coaching tools for:

    • Resume development

    • Interview simulations

    • Career exploration and goal tracking



  • Integrate digital tools and labour market platforms into employment support



Participant Support & Case Management



  • Monitor participant progress and provide ongoing mentorship

  • Identify and address barriers to employment (e.g., access, confidence, skills gaps)

  • Provide referrals to wraparound supports as needed



Monitoring & Evaluation



  • Track participant progress, engagement and outcomes including job readiness, placements and confidence levels

  • Maintain accurate case notes, reports and documentation

  • Provide feedback to team lead/program director on curriculum effectiveness



SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS



  • Degree or diploma in Career Development, Social Work, Human Resources, or related field

  • 3+ years experience in employment counselling, workforce development, or job placement programs

  • Experience working with youth and equity-deserving communities (Black youth preferred)

  • Strong understanding of labour market trends and employment pathways

  • Career coaching and counselling expertise

  • Employer engagement and relationship management

  • Strong facilitation and communication skills

  • Digital fluency (job platforms, AI tools, online recruitment systems)

  • Cultural competence and trauma-informed approach
