Are you looking for a new and exciting job opportunity? We are currently seeking a Structural Engineer to join our Streetcar Infrastructure team!
Reporting to the Senior Engineer, Design & Standards, you will be responsible for design functions associated with the maintenance and rehabilitation of TTC surface structures (e.g. tunnels, bridges, stations, track support and elevated structures) and you will provide structural engineering expertise to the development of designs, specifications, technical reports and standards. You will perform structural design work and conduct evaluations and reviews of designs to ensure they meet TTC and industry standards.
This role focuses on identifying design objectives and translating them into effective engineering solutions by performing structural design calculations and developing detailed design specifications for structural steel and reinforced concrete structures. The position involves developing designs both manually and through the use of structural analysis software and CAD systems, along with preparing specifications, cost estimates, sketches, and contract documents for routine or non‑complex repairs. In addition, the role plays an important part in protecting TTC assets by reviewing utility work submissions and Ontario One Call excavation requests to assess potential impacts on TTC structures.
Beyond design work, the position provides ongoing technical support and recommendations for structure maintenance activities. This includes conducting detailed visual and field inspections and coordinating engineering and testing work carried out by external engineering consultants. Additionally, the role requires investigating and evaluating new, existing, or proposed systems, components, and construction methods, as well as troubleshooting operational issues and malfunctions. Where appropriate, alternative designs, procedures, equipment, or materials are recommended to improve performance and reliability.
To ensure quality and consistency, the position also performs internal and external technical design reviews to confirm that TTC standards, specifications, and operational requirements are met. Additionally, the role supports informed decision‑making by assisting in the preparation of management reports and recommendations related to operational and design requirements. This role places a strong emphasis on ensuring that safety, hazard, security, cost, reliability, warranty, quality, and other engineering considerations are identified and reported in a timely manner. Finally, the role requires taking professional responsibility for designs in accordance with the requirements of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
