Engineer Trainee, BPV

As an Engineer Trainee, through hands-on work and with the support of a team of highly experienced engineers, you will learn about and apply engineering standards for boilers, pressure vessels, and pressure piping systems across Ontario. Through collaboration with inspectors, engineers, and industry stakeholders, you will help ensure that technical assessments, design reviews, and regulatory interpretations are carried out with clarity, fairness, and due diligence. Your work will strengthen confidence in Ontario's safety system by helping apply codes and standards thoughtfully and by supporting decisions that protect people, property, and the environment.

Your Key Contributions:

• Develop Technical Competency: Build a strong understanding of pressure equipment, piping systems, and welding/brazing requirements as they relate to mechanical design within Ontario's regulatory framework.


• Evaluate Design Submissions: Review TSSA application forms and supporting documents for completeness, ensuring all required information is present for compliance evaluation.


• Assess Code Compliance: Analyze technical drawings and calculations and perform stress evaluations to confirm that pressure equipment designs and meet applicable CSA, ASME, and NBIC codes and standards.


• Support Clients Through the Approval Process: Engage with clients to clarify technical questions, address identified non-compliances, and to request outstanding information.


• Issue Canadian Registration Numbers (CRNs): Authorize CRNs when submitted designs demonstrate full compliance with the relevant codes, standards, and Ontario BPV regulatory requirements.


• Review Welding and Brazing Procedures: Evaluate welding and brazing procedure submissions to ensure they align with CSA, ASME, and NBIC requirements.


• Contribute to Program Improvements: Participate in projects that enhance quality, consistency, and efficiency across the design review program.

Your Qualifications & Key Strengths:

Certifications in Progress:

• Hold a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Applied Science or an equivalent discipline recognized by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).


• Eligible to obtain a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation in Ontario within 24 months of employment.

Technical Background:

• Bring at least two years of engineering experience in a regulatory environment or within the boilers and pressure vessels industry.


• Possess knowledge of BPV codes and standards, including pressure equipment, piping systems, and welding/brazing requirements.


• Demonstrate strong analytical skills, particularly in reviewing mechanical designs, validating calculations, and assessing technical submissions.


• Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively with clients, colleagues, and inspectors, supporting clear and professional technical discussions.


• Show proficiency with computer applications and CRM systems.


• Experience with pressure equipment design software (e.g. Compress, PV Elite) is an asset.

Travel Requirements:

Limited travel may be required for training or collaborative work; therefore, the ability to travel within Ontario when needed, is an asset.
