The Etuaptamumk (Two-Eyed Seeing) Curriculum consultant will facilitate the infusion of Western and Mi’kmaq Ways of Knowing and Being into curriculum development across all subject areas.  They will work closely with MK Education consultants and communities to support the classroom curriculum that weaves both Western and Mikmaw ideologies for students. This consultant will readily consult with knowledge holders to ensure that Mikmaw knowledge, stories, and language are supported across all curriculum areas. This is a new position, we expect the position to evolve as it progresses.


Success will be measured by these results:



  • Stakeholders know that their views and recommendations are reflected in newly developed curriculum and resources

  • The new curriculum reflects both Mi’kmaw knowledge and Western best practices

  • Additional courses are created that reflect the richness of the Mi’kmaw language and culture

  • The principles of Etuaptamumk/Two-Eyed Seeing (E/TES) are readily seen in school curricula.

  • Ensure that stakeholders are readily consulted in the development of curriculum materials and resources. 

  • Supporting the infusion of resource development is reflective of Western and Mi’kmaw knowledge.  

  • Support stakeholders in developing additional courses they offer that reflect the richness of the Mikmaw language and culture. 

  • Ensures that the principles of Etuaptamumk/ Two-Eyed Seeing (E/TES) are supported across curriculum development. 


Summary of Duties:



  • To support the application of E/TES as a guiding principle as it relates to curriculum and resource development.

  • To maintain an inclusive working relationship with Mi’kmaw Elders and Knowledge Holders to ensure all work done is accurate, authentic, and sacred.

  • To work collaboratively with other staff and teacher teams to support the inclusion of E/TES in cross-curricular opportunities

  • Design, develop and conduct E/TES professional learning sessions for teachers of all grade levels, and across multiple disciplines

  • Research best practices from other indigenous organizations and assess suitability for implementation

  • To develop and/or identify resources that support teachers in their understanding of E/TES and assist with growing understanding of E/TES for students of all ages

  • Work with  MK Consultants and Tech Services to ensure that resources are readily accessible

  • To work in partnership with Mikmaw Services Branch at the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to co-contribute ideas for programs, teaching supports, and student resources.

  • To establish and maintain connections with educational partners, including those in community organisations.


Education/Experience:



  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience

  • Master's degree in education, curriculum, or leadership development 

  • Knowledge and understanding of student assessment, theory, pedagogy, and instructional practice

  • Experience in working with the community, particularly Elders and knowledge holders

  • Solid grounding in Etuaptamumk principles, and Mi’kmaw language and culture

  • Fluency in Mi’kmaw preferred

  • Computer literate (Word processing, internet software, e-mail, spreadsheet software, applications in a Windows operating environment)

  • Ability to plan, develop, and deliver professional learning opportunities. 



Knowledge:



  • First Nation demography in Nova Scotia

  • Organizational structure of various government and First Nation organizations that deal with First Nation education issues

  • Mi’kmaw culture and traditions
