Job Description - Exceptional Children (EC) Teachers- Multiple Positions

JOB TITLE: Exceptional Children (EC) Teachers- Multiple Positions

Setting: Inclusion

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

SALARY: Based on State and Local Salary Schedules

STATUS: Permanent, 10 months, Certified, Exempt

Levels: Elementary, Middle, and High Schools

SUMMARY:

Exceptional Children’s (EC) Teacher

The Exceptional Children (EC) Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and supporting individualized instruction within a variety of educational settings, including inclusive classroom environments. The EC Teacher provides specially designed instruction aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) to ensure access to the general curriculum and promote academic and social development. This role involves collaboration with general education teachers, related service providers, and families to support inclusive practices, student success, and compliance with IDEA and state regulations. The EC Teacher may also coordinate the efforts of paraprofessionals or instructional assistants.

Instructional Planning and Delivery

Assessment, Feedback, and Documentation
7. Monitor student progress through formative and summative assessments; adjust instruction based on data and observations.
8. Provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback on academic tasks and behavior to encourage student growth.
9. Maintain accurate and confidential records, including progress monitoring data, IEP documentation, and assessment results.

Inclusion and Collaboration
10. Collaborate effectively with general education teachers to implement inclusive practices, co-teaching strategies, accommodations, and modifications.
11. Serve as a resource and consultant to school staff on best practices for inclusion and differentiated instruction.
12. Ensure IEP services are implemented across all instructional settings, including inclusive classrooms, as specified in student plans.

IEP Development and Compliance
13. Develop, write, and revise high-quality IEPs aligned with student needs and compliant with federal/state guidelines.
14. Facilitate IEP meetings including annual IEP review meetings and participate in reevaluations and eligibility determinations when requested by school administration.
15. Ensure all timelines for evaluations, IEPs, progress reports, and parent communications are met with accuracy and professionalism.
16. Provide required documentation and notifications to IEP team members and ensure they understand and implement student services.

Case Management and Student Support
17. Monitor and support the academic, behavioral, and functional performance of students on caseload.
18. Coordinate interventions and team discussions when students are not making expected progress.
19. Track suspension days, attendance, and academic participation to ensure compliance with IDEA requirements.
20. Organize and maintain both working and confidential student files in accordance with district and audit procedures.

Communication and Professionalism
21. Communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, administrators, and external partners.
22. Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain knowledge of current best practices in special education.
23. Attend required trainings, staff meetings, and district initiatives.
24. Utilize appropriate technology tools for documentation, reporting, and communication.

Additional Responsibilities
25. Complete all district and state forms accurately, including testing accommodations and IEP-related documentation.
26. Notify appropriate personnel in situations involving potential legal implications, separate placements, or financial considerations.
27. Carry out non-instructional duties as assigned and maintain professional conduct in all interactions.

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field from an accredited institution

  • Valid Virginia teaching license in Exceptional Children (or eligibility through alternative licensure routes)

  • Strong understanding of instructional practices, curriculum differentiation, and behavior management in inclusive and self-contained settings

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to build positive relationships and collaborate with diverse stakeholders

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based data systems

  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and respond effectively in a dynamic environment

  • Commitment to equity, student-centered instruction, and continuous improvement

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and drive

  • Light lifting (up to 50 lbs.) may be required

  • Visual and auditory acuity to meet the needs of students
