The Family Support Worker provides culturally grounded, prevention-focused services to children, youth, and families of Cold Lake First Nations. This role supports families in strengthening parenting capacity, addressing risk factors, accessing community resources, and promoting overall family well-being.
The Family Support Worker does not exercise statutory child protection authority but works collaboratively with internal teams and external service providers to enhance family stability and prevent crisis escalation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Family & Individual Support
Provide one-on-one support to families experiencing challenges related to parenting, family conflict, housing instability, substance use, poverty, or trauma
Conduct strengths-based family assessments and develop collaborative support plans
Support parents in understanding child development and positive parenting strategies
Assist families in accessing community resources, including housing, income supports, mental health services, and cultural programming
Provide transportation and accompaniment to appointments when required
Prevention & Early Intervention
Identify early risk factors and implement prevention-focused interventions
Support families in developing safety and wellness plans
Facilitate parenting workshops, family circles, and group programming
Promote healthy family relationships and reunification efforts where appropriate
Collaboration & Case Coordination
Participate in joint case management with internal teams and external partners
Liaise with Alberta Children’s Services, schools, health providers, and justice supports as required
Advocate for families to ensure culturally appropriate services are provided
Maintain professional boundaries while working in a close-knit community
Cultural Integration
Incorporate Indigenous cultural teachings, traditions, and protocols into service delivery
Engage Elders and Knowledge Keepers when appropriate
Support families in reconnecting with culture, language, and land-based activities
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate, confidential case notes and electronic files
Complete required reporting for funding agreements and internal review
Track service statistics and contribute to program evaluation
Ensure compliance with policies, funding agreements, and relevant legislation
Community Engagement
Participate in community outreach events and workshops
Promote prevention services and raise awareness within the Edmonton and Cold Lake areas
Identify service gaps and communicate emerging needs to leadership
Other Duties
Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Diploma or Degree in Human Services, Social Work, Child & Youth Care, or related field
Minimum 2–3 years experience working with families in a community or prevention setting
Strong understanding of trauma-informed and strengths-based practice
Knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act (CYFEA) (asset)
Understanding of Indigenous cultural protocols, traditions, and community history
Ability to work respectfully with diverse and vulnerable populations
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Sound judgment and ability to manage confidential information
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and case documentation systems
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and reliable transportation
Clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check required
Working Conditions
Monday to Thursday: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Friday: 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Some evening and weekend work may be required
Frequent travel within Edmonton and to Cold Lake community
Office-based work combined with home visits and community outreach
Exposure to emotionally charged situations requiring sensitivity and professionalism
Ability to lift and carry program materials (up to 20 lbs)
