Financial Accountant

Job Summary

The Financial Accountant role is primarily focused preparing financial information and analyzing that financial information using business intelligence tools.

Financial reporting responsibilities include the completion of the financial information for PES and PSL. In addition, they are responsible for various journal entries required to produce financial information, completing revenue recognition reports and ensuring the accuracy of overhead expenses.

Business intelligence responsibilities include implementing and developing a BI environment to enable the Financial Accounting department to provide additional insight into the financial performance of Propak on a department, division and organizational level.

The Financial Accountant must think critically and approach problems from varying perspectives. They should communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner. They should always act with integrity.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Adhering to and identifying improvements to internal controls related to all areas of responsibility.


• Documenting and reviewing policies and procedures to ensure accuracy and adherence.

PES:

• Preparation of monthly financial reports.


• Preparation of journal entries related to intercompany transactions, accruals, prepayments, fixed assets and other accounts as required.


• Reconciliation of relevant balance sheet accounts to appropriate back-up.


• Reviewing, analyzing and proactively ensuring the correct GL coding of Overhead expenses.


• Completion of Job Cost Detail Report, ensuring correct categorization and revenue recognition procedures applied.


• Communicate and build relationships with management and operations staff to support and provide accounting related support and knowledge in a proactive manner.


• Report and present financial information to management regarding the division’s performance each month.


• Ensure financial information and data is process and stored in a best practice manner.

PSL:

• Preparation of journal entries related to interdivision transactions, accruals, prepayments, fixed assets and other accounts as required.


• Reconciling all PSL assigned balance sheet accounts to appropriate back-up.


• Reviewing, analyzing and proactively ensuring the correct GL coding of Overhead expenses.


• Communicate and build Relationships with management and operations staff to support and provide accounting related support and knowledge in a proactive manner.


• Report and present financial information to management regarding the division’s performance at regular intervals.


• Ensure financial information and data is process and stored in a best practice manner.

Business Intelligence:

• Facilitate the implementation of Business Intelligence (BI) tools such as Power BI.


• Connecting to and/or querying data sources in Excel, SQL and other environments as required and transforming data to meet BI requirements.


• Developing visual reports and dashboards to provide additional insight into financial and non-financial performance at department, division and organizational level.


• Provide and be open to receiving technical assistance and cross training related to BI to and from other members of the Financial Accounting team.


• Design and implement BI best practices, guidelines and repeatable processes.

Other:

• Completion of tasks as required to ensure continuation of the accounting and finance functions in the absence of other team members.


• Provide support to external auditors to facilitate the completion of the annual audit.


• Completion of ad hoc accounting related tasks as requested.


• Other accounting related tasks as the employee grows in experience and knowledge.


• Manage the transition of remaining paper-based accounting records to digital format.

Prerequisites Education

• One- or two-year diploma or certificate in business with an accounting focus.


• Currently enrolled in CPA Professional Education Program (PEP).

Experience

• 2 to 3 years of accounting experience


• 2 to 3 years previous experience using Microsoft Office programs including Excel


• 2 to 3 years extensive experience working with leading ERP platforms, including Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365), SAP and Oracle.


• 1 to 2 years’ experience using business intelligence tools

Other

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including but not limited to Excel, Outlook, and Word


• Experience using business intelligence tools such as Power BI or Tableau.


• Must be able to complete basic accounting and mathematical computations with a high degree of accuracy
