Job Description - Fishery Guardian

We’koqma’q First Nation is committed to sustainable fisheries management and environmental stewardship. As a Fishery Guardian, you will play a critical role in safeguarding our fisheries. You will work to ensure that fishing activities adhere to regulations and agreements. Your responsibilities will include monitoring catch, collecting data, and enforcing fishing rules.


 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Conduct regular patrols of fishing areas to monitor activities and ensure compliance with fisheries regulations.

  • Inspect fishing gear and catch to verify adherence to legal standards.

  • Collect data on fish populations, habitats, and fishing activities to support resource management decisions.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of fisheries management plans.

  • Participate in habitat restoration projects and other conservation initiatives.

  • Educate community members about sustainable fishing practices and the importance of fisheries conservation.

  • Conduct workshops and presentations to raise awareness about fisheries regulations and environmental stewardship.

  • Collaborate with local schools and organizations to promote fisheries education.

  • Maintain accurate records of patrols, inspections, and enforcement actions.

  • Prepare reports on fisheries activities and resource conditions.

  • Provide regular updates to the Fisheries Manager and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Ensure personal safety and the safety of others during patrols and inspections.

  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures.

  • Maintain and properly use all equipment and gear.


 


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES



  • Must be a We’koqma’q Community member.

  • High school diploma or an equivalent is required.

  • Prior experience/knowledge of fisheries and small water vessels.

  • Strong communication skills are essential. Should be able to convey information clearly and work well with coworkers and the general public.

  • Ability to remain calm and in control during tense situations is crucial.

  • Skilled at resolving conflicts and finding solutions.

  • A valid boat operator’s license is considered an asset.
