Job Description - Fitness & Recreation Coordinator

Position Summary


Reporting to the Manager, Recreation & Wellness, the Fitness & Recreation Coordinator leads the development and delivery of various fitness, recreation, and wellness activities at Seneca International Academy (SIA).


In this role, you will deliver programming and provide fitness orientation/guidance, evaluation, and personalized plans to help participants achieve their goals, while monitoring the safe use of equipment. In addition, you will plan, deliver, and evaluate intercampus, intramural, and extramural recreation programs. Another element of this role includes implementing and delivering virtual programs and creating social media content related to fitness, recreation, and wellness at SIA.


As the Fitness & Recreation Coordinator, you will be responsible for scheduling and supervising the fitness centre and recreational spaces, as well as hiring and providing guidance to fitness and recreation staff. As such, you will play an important role in ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.


Responsibilities


Fitness Centre Administration



  • Orients new members to the facility through fitness orientations and welcome programs, policies and procedures, initiating, validating and monitoring memberships as well as processing sales.

  • Teaches fitness and wellness classes and/or offers personal training as required.

  • Conducts fitness research and keeps current in the latest certifications and training, fitness equipment, new instruction techniques and programs; makes recommendations and implements change based on findings.

  • Liaises with Fitness Coordinators at other campuses to develop and implement policies, procedures, and guidelines for fitness programs and fitness operations as well as information sharing on Seneca programs and promotions.

  • Prepares fitness promotions to create awareness of Fitness Centre and programs, both in person and online.


Recreation Programming



  • Develops and implements creative recreation programming to meet the needs of the diverse population at SIA.

  • Monitors recreation facilities and adapts staffing, programs and rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment.

  • Adjusts programs in accordance with popularity of activities, department or Seneca initiatives or priorities (e.g., women in sport, cultural activities).

  • Purchases required equipment for recreational activities.

  • Provides detailed year-end report on all programming, events and activities.


Wellness Programming



  • Works in conjunction with the Sr. Wellness and Recreation Coordinator and other departments to plan and deliver wellness events and programs in person and virtually.


Staff Leadership



  • Recruits, trains, schedules, supervises, and oversees payroll of part-time instructors and student staff.

  • Provides guidance to part-time customer service/student staff/recreation team to ensure appropriate behaviour, proper protocols and correct schedules are being followed.

  • Supervises and oversees all programs and activities.


Coordination of Intercampus, Intramural and Extramural Teams



  • Oversees SIA Intercampus, Intramural, Extramural teams and events, including recruiting coaches, setting up tryout dates, hosting tournaments, administering team meetings, and booking practice facilities.

  • Regularly communicates with coaches and athletes and books extramural tournaments for teams.

  • Travels in a supervisory/ troubleshooting capacity with team to extramural tournaments.

  • Follows all Ontario Collegiate Recreation (OCR) guidelines and timelines.


Qualifications


Education



  • Minimum completed two (2) year diploma in sport administration, recreation and fitness studies, or a related discipline.

  • Certified Personal Trainer with CSEP or CanFitPro required.

  • Group Fitness Certification required.

  • First Aid and CPR certified, or willingness to obtain.

  • NCCP Trained in Community Sport (Initiation) or equivalent (Level 1), or willingness to obtain.


Experience



  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in fitness facility operations and administration, including individual and group fitness testing, instruction, and personal training.

  • Experience leading student staff.

  • Experience using various social media platforms in a professional setting, with the ability to deliver virtual programs and create digital promotional tools.

  • Experience organizing and delivering recreational activity/events and competitive sport, including scheduling and league organization.


Skills



  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to effectively guide staff, students, and other stakeholders.

  • Understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, with experience serving a diverse student population.

  • Strong organization, attention to detail and problem-solving skills, with the ability to anticipate and mitigate risk.

  • Creative and innovative mindset, with a focus on continuous improvement.

  • Ability to frequently travel to different campuses and to off-campus locations for meetings, games and events, sometimes outside of standard working hours. Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle preferred.


Note: A skills assessment test will be administered during the recruitment process.


A combination of relevant experience and education may be considered as equivalent to the above requirements in the event that there are no internal applicants that meet the qualifications as posted. Equivalency will be assessed by the talent acquisition team.
