Floater Teacher

Position Overview

Mi'kmawey School is seeking a flexible, collaborative, and student-centred Floater Teacher to
provide instructional and operational support throughout the school. This position plays an
important role in maintaining continuity of learning by filling in for classroom teachers and
supporting students, staff, and school operations as needed. The successful candidate will be
adaptable, proactive, and committed to creating culturally relevant learning environments that
reflect Mi'kmaw values, language, and traditions.

Key Responsibilities:  

• Provide classroom instruction in the absence of a teacher using pre-prepared lesson
  plans.


• Develop and deliver grade-appropriate lesson plans when plans are unavailable.
  Support classroom teachers through small group instruction, one-on-one interventions,
  and classroom activities.
  


• Adapt quickly to different grade levels, subject areas, and classroom environments.
  


• Provide support in a variety of school roles, including teacher, classroom support, and
  administrative assistance, as required.
  


• Assist with school-wide activities, special events, cultural programming, and professional
  learning opportunities.
  


• Collaborate with staff to identify and address classroom or operational needs.
  


• Contribute ideas and support curriculum development and other educational initiatives.
  


• Build positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community members.
  


• Integrate Mi'kmaw language, culture, customs, and traditions into teaching practices
  whenever possible.
  


• Maintain confidentiality while promoting a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning
  environment.
  


• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Bachelor of Education.
  


• Eligible for or hold a valid Nova Scotia Teacher's Certificate.
  


• Experience teaching in an elementary school setting is preferred.
  


• Strong classroom management, instructional planning, and student engagement skills.
  


• Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability, and ability to respond to changing school needs.
  


• Excellent communication, collaboration, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  


• Knowledge of Google Docs and educational technology.
  


• Valid Driver's Licence and reliable transportation.
  


• Current Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check.
  


• Knowledge of Mi'kmaw language, culture, customs, and traditions is considered a strong
  asset.

Compensation
This position is covered under the Potlotek Education Collective Agreement, with wages and
benefits provided according to the applicable salary scale.
