Job Description - Food Collective Centre General Volunteer (1st year student priority hiring)

As per MSU employment policies - "Only MSU members in good standing shall be eligible for part-time employment with McMaster Student Union." This includes, but is not limited to- "All undergraduate students at McMaster University enrolled in 18 units or more during an academic session.." Term: Current - April 30, 2026


Supervisor: FCC Director


Hours: Roughly 3 hours per week

Food Collective Centre is a service run by students dedicated to cultivating stronger food systems in the McMaster and surrounding community. We offer a number of support resources that are available for everyone: Students, Alumni, Staff, and Hamilton



The role of a Food Collective Centre General Volunteer has flexibility and opportunities for specialization. Depending on your availability and interests, you can assume as many or as few roles/leadership positions as you feel comfortable within this service. Volunteers can be involved in aiding the execution and development of Food Collective Centre Social and Political Advocacy campaigns. Regular responsibilities will include participating in planning meetings, gathering information, promoting campaigns, answering advocacy inquiries, attending relevant sessions of McMaster governing bodies, as well as providing additional support if necessary. Additionally, volunteers are encouraged to help with the packing of Good Food Boxes (GFBs) on the morning of the first Tuesday of every month. Regular responsibilities include sorting local produce, packing local produce into boxes/bags under direction, transporting Good Food Boxes back to McMaster campus, and helping with the distribution of Good Food Boxes to buyers. They will also be responsible for providing additional support to the Good Food Coordinator for promotions and marketing.

  • Be able to effectively communicate with others 



  • Organization and time management skills 



  • Good interpersonal skills 



  • Ability to work effectively with a team and as an individual 



  • Knowledge of or an interest in Food Collective Centre issues (e.g. food security, food accessibility, food sustainability) is an asset 



  • Experience working with diverse populations or at-risk populations is an asset 


 


Effort & Responsibility 



  • Attend all orientation and training sessions 



  • Attend volunteer meetings 



  • Attend shifts where a commitment has been made 



  • Maintain confidentiality of campaign activities and Food Collective Centre patrons 


 


Working Conditions 



  • Volunteers can choose to be packing GFBs at Grace Lutheran Church  



  • Volunteers must be able to work with others from the McMaster community and the greater Hamilton Community 



  • Meetings will occur in McMaster campus spaces 


 


Training and Experience 



  • Previous experience volunteering with Food Collective Centre not necessary 



  • Necessary training will be provided 



  • Specific instruction will be provided during GFB packing from Grace Lutheran Church
