Job Description - Full-Time Cataract Counselor / Ophthalmic Technician

Are you passionate about helping patients navigate their surgical journey while supporting physicians in delivering world-class eye care? Do you excel in both patient counseling and clinical technical work in a fast-paced medical environment?

Who We Are

Fraser Valley Cataract & Laser (FVCL) is a rapidly growing ophthalmology clinic specializing in advanced eye care and surgical procedures. Our team of nationally recognized ophthalmologists provides a full spectrum of ocular services, including MSP-covered exams and surgeries, private lens procedures, and LASIK.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced, energetic, and detail-oriented Cataract Counselor / Ophthalmic Technician to join our team full-time. This unique role combines patient counseling with hands-on technical and clinical support. You will guide patients through their cataract and refractive surgery journey while also performing ophthalmic testing, assisting physicians, and supporting surgical procedures.

Training will take place at both our Surrey and Abbotsford clinics, with long-term placement in Abbotsford.

If you’re motivated, organized, and eager to be part of a dynamic surgical center that values exceptional patient care, we’d love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Counseling & Administrative Support

  • Educate and counsel patients on cataract and refractive surgery options (RLE, ICL, LASIK, PRK).

  • Manage surgical slating and create patient surgical charts.

  • Compile and analyze monthly KPI reports.

  • Coordinate follow-up calls with refractive surgery patients.

  • Promote product sales and help achieve department targets.

  • Assist with administrative duties (scanning, filing, photocopying, inventory management).

Ophthalmic Technician Duties

  • Perform diagnostic tests including OCT, visual field, autorefractor, corneal topography, A-scan, and Pentacam.

  • Work up patients: take histories, measure visual acuities, assess pupils, and perform IOP testing.

  • Scribe for ophthalmologists during exams.

  • Prepare and assist during eyelid and cataract surgeries and laser procedures.

  • Populate pre-dictated surgical notes and ensure proper charting.

  • Administer drops as per physician preference.

  • Prepare, clean, and stock exam rooms and testing areas.

What We’re Looking For

  • 2–3 years of ophthalmology or medical clinic experience preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of cataract and refractive surgeries (preferred but not required).

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to counsel elderly patients with patience and clarity.

  • Proficiency with Google Drive, Google Sheets, MS Excel, Word, Accuro EMR, and PowerPoint.

  • A strong work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to multitask in a busy clinic setting.

  • Comfort with medical technology and diagnostic equipment.

  • Fluency in Mandarin or Hindi is an asset.

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy in patient records.

  • Ability to stay calm and professional under pressure.

  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.

  • Ethical and committed to patient confidentiality.

What We Offer

  • Full-time position in a collaborative, patient-focused team.

  • Training at both Surrey and Abbotsford clinics (first 3 months).

  • Opportunity to work in a nationally recognized surgical center.

  • A dynamic role that combines counseling, technical skills, and direct patient care.

If you are ready to be part of a dedicated team that prioritizes exceptional patient experiences, please email your resume, cover letter, and wage expectations. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for a working interview.

Candidates without direct ophthalmology experience are welcome to apply if they demonstrate a strong work ethic and ability to learn quickly.
