Job Description - Fund Development & Communications Officer



The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ Nova Scotia office (CCPA-NS) is hiring a Fund Development and Communications Officer, who will have the primary responsibility for implementing the fund development and communications plans of CCPA-NS. The CCPA-NS is a provincial office of the CCPA, an independent, charitable, non-partisan research institute concerned with issues of social, economic and environmental justice. The Officer also provides support to the Director in carrying out day-to-day management of the office, supporting the release and knowledge translation of policy research.


Key Responsibilities



  • Advances the vision and mission of CCPA-NS.

  • Fosters a culture of philanthropy within the organization.

  • Supports CCPA-NS’ revenue and communications goals.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of a fund development plan that will include annual giving, special appeals, major gifts, planned giving, events, and donor stewardship.

  • With the Director, ensures key partnerships are built and maintained.

  • Undertakes administrative tasks related to CCPA-NS’ strategic plan, including project support, financial administration, and other tasks as needed.

  • Posts approved blogs and web updates and is responsible for reporting on, monitoring and creating the content for the organization’s social media feeds and reporting on the feeds.

  • Provides support for media relations, including preparing media releases for publications and making media pitches.


Essential Duties of the Position


Fund Development



  • Supports the design, implementation, management and evaluation of CCPA-NS’ annual strategies and plans for fund development.

  • Effectively oversees and delivers fundraising activities, including:

    • CCPA-NS’s Signature Event – Annual Fundraising Gala

    • Annual Giving Campaign

    • Major Gifts Planning and Execution

    • Foundation Applications



  • Initiates prospect research, cultivation, and solicitation to achieve the organization’s fund development goals.

  • Participates in annual business planning and budget processes.

  • Tracks and monitors the fund development budget, ensuring compliance and proactive achievement of net revenue goals.

  • Initiates, nurtures, and implements effective partnerships with sponsors, donors, and stakeholders to meet the organization’s identified operational priorities.

  • Ensures effective donor relations, cultivation, stewardship, and recognition.


Communications & Stakeholder Relations



  • Supports the implementation and tracks CCPA-NS’ annual communications plan in accordance with the strategic plan, and annual fund development goals.

  • Supports report releases, including press pitches, media advisories, and press releases.

  • Plans, implements. and reports on all the organization’s direct mail, newsletter, e-newsletters, and other communication including social media.

  • Organizes the Association’s annual general meeting.

  • Organizes the production of the Annual Report and bi-annual e-magazine.


Other



  • Ensures strong communication and collaborative relationships with colleagues.

  • Serves on internal and community committees where applicable.

  • Identifies and pursues opportunities for personal and professional development.

  • Other duties as delegated by the Nova Scotia Director.


Qualifications and Experience



  • A post-secondary degree or a suitable combination of training and experience.


Basic requirements



  • Minimum 2 years of experience in fundraising, public relations, or communications & marketing.

  • Superior communication skills, including presentation abilities and highly effective written skills.

  • High degree of computer literacy.

  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills.




Skills and abilities


Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently from home and as a team member.


Must be proactive, have a high degree of initiative and excellent follow-through. Must be organized, have proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.


Assets



  • Experience with social and economic justice issues.

  • Knowledge of the progressive labour and community sectors in Nova Scotia.

  • Experience in a non-profit environment is desirable.

  • Experience with Wordpress, Mailchimp, and/or Donorperfect or similar donor or CRM databases.

  • Working conditions

  • Home office and financial support to furnish it. Some travel within the Halifax Regional Municipality.




SALARY AND BENEFITS:



  • Unionized position as part of the collective agreement between CCPA and UNIFOR 567; Full-time (35 hours) with some flexibility. Salary will be within the unionized pay grid, depending on experience, $63,000-$70,705.

  • CCPA offers an excellent health benefits program paid for by the employer and generous paid leave, including 14 stat holidays, a complete office shutdown between Christmas and New Year’s and 20 days paid vacation in the first year of service.

  • Duration: permanent after the probationary period.
