Gallery Attendant

Role Responsibilities

Help bring interactive exhibits to life while creating safe, engaging, and inclusive experiences for visitors of all ages.

Working in the museum’s feature gallery, you will engage directly with visitors, support the operation of interactive exhibits, manage visitor flow, and help ensure everyone enjoys a welcoming and accessible experience.

You will be responsible for:

• Engaging visitors, answering questions, and facilitating interactive exhibit experiences.


• Creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive gallery environment.


• Managing visitor flow and equitable access in busy exhibition spaces.


• Monitoring gallery activities and addressing visitors’ concerns with professionalism and sound judgment.


• Performing basic exhibit troubleshooting and reporting operational issues.


• Supporting school groups, families, and other high-volume audiences.


• Collaborating with staff, volunteers, and contractors to ensure smooth gallery operations.

Qualifications

Required:  

• Minimum high school diploma PLUS 1-year related experience working in a public-facing role or equivalent as described

Equivalency:

• Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

For Example: 

• Related 1 year certificate, no experience required.


• Related 2-year diploma, no experience required. 


• Related minimum of 2 years of experience.

Preference may be given to candidates with experience in a museum, cultural institution or similar informal learning environments. 

Must-Haves

• Experience in a public-facing, customer service, visitor experience, or cultural environment. 


• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences. 


• Proven ability to deliver excellent customer service and resolve visitor concerns professionally. 


• Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively in a fast-paced environment. 


• Sound judgment and problem-solving skills, including knowing when to escalate issues. 


• Experience working collaboratively within a team environment. 


• Ability to monitor visitor activities and maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

• Experience in a museum, gallery, cultural institution, education, or community engagement setting. 


• Experience facilitating interactive exhibits, hands-on learning, or informal education programs. 


• Familiarity with basic troubleshooting of interactive or digital technologies. 


• Experience supporting school groups, families, or large visitor groups. 


• Knowledge of accessibility best practices and supporting equitable access for diverse audiences. 


• Experience using de-escalation or conflict-resolution techniques in public settings. 


• Proficiency in French or another second language.

Notes

Additional Position Details:

• Term of Employment: Temporary up to April 17, 2027.


• Hours of Work: This position follows a regular schedule of Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., including a one-hour unpaid lunch break (7.25 hours worked per day). Occasional Thursday evening work is required to support programs, events, or operational needs.


• Location: Edmonton.
