Garden Assistant (Seasonal)

Reports To: Garden Lead 

Location: Hitacu, BC — Saasin Čačimḥiýap Community Garden 

Employment Type: Full-Time, Seasonal (Spring – Summer) 

POSITION PURPOSE 

Supports the ongoing development and operation of the Saasin Čačimḥiýap Community Garden (Hummingbird Healing Someone Garden). Engages community members in garden activities, carries out horticultural tasks, and assists with the maintenance and harvesting of the garden. 

ACCOUNTABILITY 

Daily Garden Duties 

• Perform general garden construction tasks including building boxes, moving materials, and planting. 

• Complete basic gardening tasks such as weeding, watering, harvesting, and pest management. 

• Assist with seasonal setup, cleanup, and site upkeep. 
  
  

Team Collaboration & Community Engagement 

• Engage community members and volunteers in garden activities. 

• Communicate effectively with staff and volunteers. 

• Promote a positive, welcoming, and respectful work environment. 
  
  

Safety & Equipment Care 

• Use tools and equipment safely in line with YG health and safety policies. 

• Report hazards, incidents, or equipment issues to the Garden Lead. 

• Keep work areas tidy and organized. 
  
  

Cultural Respect & Other Duties 

• Show care and respect for traditional and culturally significant plants. 

• Support the Garden Lead with food preservation, distribution, and community events as needed. 

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Garden Lead in accordance with YG policies, standards, and practices. 
  
  

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 

Required: 

• Satisfactory criminal records check 

• Ability to comfortably use power tools 

Preferred: 

• Experience gardening and/or working outdoors 

• Knowledge of or interest in community engagement

• Work is primarily performed in an outdoor setting and involves working in all weather conditions 

• Physical ability to lift 50 lbs and perform repetitive lifting and turning
