Job Description - GIS Specialist

Your Contribution to NRSI
NRSI is looking for a qualified individual with primary expertise in GIS and GPS concepts to join our growing team of GIS staff. You will contribute to the development and design of mapping associated with environmental impact studies, restoration plans, tree protection plans, and more. The successful applicant will be based out of our Waterloo office and expected to occasionally contribute to field—based tasks. The primary duties and responsibilities for this role include:
  • Responsibilities:
  • GIS, AutoCAD, and Mapping Support: Provide GIS and mapping support for a wide range of environmental projects, including map development for Environmental Impact Studies (EIS), Restoration Plans, Tree Inventory and Preservation Plans, and renewable energy projects.
  • Mapping Product Preparation and Cartography: Create and design maps, ranging from simple edits to comprehensive map sets, ensuring clarity and adherence to cartographic principles.
  • Digitization of Spatial Data: Digitize biological survey data, including vegetation communities, wildlife habitats, and monitoring stations.
  • AutoCAD Integration: Integrate AutoCAD drawings into ArcMap and facilitate data exchange between AutoCAD and GIS platforms.
  • Spatial Analysis: Perform spatial analysis to support project requirements, applying GIS tools and methodologies.
  • Fieldwork and Data Collection: Conduct occasional fieldwork to collect spatial data using GPS and drone equipment, and process the data for incorporation into GIS databases.
  • Staff Supervision and Mentorship: Supervise GIS Technicians, provide mentorship, and oversee their work. Conduct quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) for day-to-day mapping tasks.
  • Client and Agency Liaison: Participate in client and agency liaison activities, particularly in relation to GIS and AutoCAD tasks.
  • Time Management and Task Planning: Effectively manage time and prioritize tasks to meet project deadlines.
  • Professional Development: Develop and complete a personal professional development plan. Provide internal training to staff on advanced GIS processes and best practices.
  • Non-billable Support Tasks: Manage and update base data, maintain project folders and files, and create documentation for GIS and AutoCAD processes.
Your Education:
  • A post-secondary degree or diploma related to Geomatics, Geography or Environmental Studies
Requirements:
  • High level of expertise in the use of ArcGIS 10x, preferably through workplace experience.
  • Experience in the concepts of GPS data collection, Trimble survey poles or equivalent.
  • Expertise in cartography concepts and map design.
Key Job Requirements: 
  • A valid driver's license
  • A post-secondary degree or diploma related to Geomatics, Geography or Environmental Studies
Assets:
  • Experience with QGIS/QField, graphics software, ArcGIS spatial analysis, and ArcGIS Pro
  • AutoCAD, interpreting site plans and basic surveying theory
  • GPS Field Data Collection
  • Experience with drone operation and a drone pilot’s license.
  • Programming - Python, JavaScript, SQL, Git
  • Experience creating Documentation (e.g., Mediawiki)
  • Experience with Spatial Database:  SQL (PostGIS)
  • Business process automation

Salary: $29.00-$36.50.00 per hour, commensurate on experience.
