Job Description - Global HR Director

This is a Full-Time Role (40 hours per week) with no option for part-time work. While this is a remote-first opportunity, the candidate filling this role must be a resident of Pennsylvania, New York, or the District of Columbia at the start of employment. Additionally, they must be within commuting distance of our office in Philadelphia, New York City, or Washington D.C. proper.

About the Opportunity

The People and Culture (P&C) team manages the entire employee lifecycle from recruiting to onboarding, from developing and promotion to separation. Our goal is to curate and shape systems for B Lab so that our teammates can do their best work, and be their most authentic, best selves at work. The P&C team seeks to promote and cultivate a culture where staff are able and equipped to make decisions within their scope as well as advance the strategy and objectives of B Lab Global's Theory of Change. This team serves employees in "talent hubs" across the globe (as of this posting, this includes: São Paulo, Brazil; London, United Kingdom; Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, New York, and Denver, USA). The team actively advances B Lab’s commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) in the workplace, work-life balance, career development opportunities, performance management, and engagement, as well as providing support to teams through coaching and mentorship.

The team is comprised of the following roles: 

  • Global People & Culture Director
  • Senior Manager, Learning & Development
  • Talent Acquisition Manager
  • Global People & Culture Manager
  • The P&C team reports to the Global HR Director, which is internally referred to as the Global P&C Director ; the Global P&C Director is a member of the Senior Leadership Circle (B Lab Global’s equivalent to a “C-Suite”) and reports to B Lab Global’s co-Lead Executive and Head of External Affairs (one role). Within P&C, we have five specific branches of work:

  • People Strategy & Total Rewards: compensation, benefits, strategic planning, evaluation (performance) 
  • Learning & Development: training, shared language and organizational knowledge 
  • Talent: attraction & equitable recruitment
  • People Systems Operations: people data, HR transactions, policies adherence 
  • Engagement: wellness, belonging, measurements and engagement metrics
  • The Global P&C Director is tasked with designing, implementing, and directing a best-in-class function and serves as a strategic thought partner and business partner to their peers and the Senior Leadership Circle (SLC). The Global P&C Director is responsible for supporting and developing B Lab’s global team and fostering an environment that allows people to do their best work. This position leads and curates strategies for positive cultural practices for a people-focused, diverse, equitable and inclusive organization, enabling B Lab to deliver on its global vision, mission, and strategy. A secondary responsibility is to provide dotted-line management to the People & Culture Regional Director who is focused on the employee experience at B Lab Global’s subsidiary - B Lab U.S. and Canada (USCA). This role will partner with and support that individual, who reports to the Executive Director of USCA. This role will also provide strategic guidance to the Executive Director of USCA.

    Core Responsibilities 

    Strategic Leadership and Organizational Design (30%)

  • Collaborate with all departments to create and implement resource planning models to identify competency, knowledge, and talent gaps and develop specific programs/plans for filling the gaps
  • Play a strategic role in setting the direction of the people management function by undertaking appropriate diagnostic measures, prioritizing solutions, and developing action plans
  • Ensure alignment with JEDI in workplace culture and to employee events, policies, procedures, recruiting, and managing employees
  • Operations (70%)

    Recruitment/retention/onboarding/offboarding

  • Partner with P&C team members to manage recruitment and talent acquisition aligned with the B Lab brand and culture
  • Oversee B Lab Global’s onboarding and offboarding processes
  • Designing and developing people strategies including recognition, recruiting, retention, and performance management across the global offices of B Lab Global
  • Lead and coordinate global office location plan, lease renewals with Finance and Senior Leadership Circle 
  • Employee Engagement/Culture/Learning

  • Design, lead, and develop employee engagement strategies
  • Oversee employee engagement, inclusion, and belonging, including tools to measure, manage, and take action on employee surveys; administer annual Inclusion and Engagement survey and analyze results to determine areas for improvement. Do this in partnership with the Director of JEDI. 
  • Partner with P&C team member to support them in delivering on their roles, including Learning & Development programming that benefits staff.
  • Lead performance evaluation process for the organization, connecting to team and individual objectives, in order to build a culture of feedback and continuous learning
  • Field and address employee outreach and concerns 
  • Compliance and Operations

  • Ensure adequate policies and procedures are in place for global people management, which as of this posting includes employees in the United States, Netherlands, Brazil and the United Kingdom
  • Develop and track progress for an annual scorecard for People & Culture with quarterly key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Prepare and track People & Culture annual budget
  • Partner with P&C team member to support them in day-to-day operations including payroll, benefits, administration, etc. 
  • Comply with state, federal, and national laws (for all global offices) and employee safeguarding practices in collaboration with the legal team and outside counsel
  • Guide the selection, acquisition, and integration of technology to enable effective remote and office-based working
  • Manage key vendor relationships (e.g., benefits, HRIS (UKG), learning (FreshDesk), global employer of record (Globalization Partners), etc.
  • Organizational Performance

  • Partner with functional leads in Finance and Administration, Standards, Certification and Verification, Impact Development, Strategic Growth, and Strategy and B Corp Community, and Internal Comms to deliver integrated and organization-wide People & Culture communications, programs, and services
  • Facilitate effective implementation of new people management initiatives in different departments and levels of the foundation
  • Create a global compensation and benefits strategy that is aligned with B Lab’s sister organizations (Global Partners) globally
  • Major objectives for the role in the first 6-12 months

  • Launch or support (if already underway) org-wide compensation philosophy review 
  • Advance and complete B Lab Global values workstream (if project is not completed before new hire's start date)
  • Review and update employee performance management philosophy and approach 

  • About You

  • 10-15 years of significant experience in human resources, with 5-7 years in a management role in which you were responsible for overseeing multiple HR functions
  • Global Professional in Human Resources certification and Certified Compensation Professional
  • Expertise in US labor laws, immigration laws, and compliance requirements 
  • Global HR knowledge & experience which includes Canada, Brazil, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Australia
  • Ability to rapidly expand your knowledge base on local labor and immigration laws and compliance requirements where our hubs are located
  • Organizational change management experience within the human resources function of a business with direct experience in HR leadership through periods of organizational change and growth.
  • Experience building diverse teams and managing & developing employees
  • Track record of integrating Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion practices into organizational culture and policies
  • Understanding of how to foster culture and build an inclusive work environment in a non-profit and/or values-driven organization with distributed leadership and decision making
  • Strong relationship management skills with the ability to approach internal and external relations through diplomacy
  • Data-driven process & policy development experience with a people-centered approach to meeting organizational goals
  • Experience working in a remote-first environment with a globally distributed team
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented approach to troubleshooting and process improvement
  • Ability to communicate to multiple learning styles and versed in explaining technical topics in a digestible format
  • Experience procuring and using HRIS platforms and HR tech stack

  • Proficiency in other languages is not required but would be a plus and could be noted in you application
  • Compensation Details

    B Lab has a compensation plan that includes:

  • An annual salary in the range of$144,000 - $151,000
  • Excellent health benefits package including access to medical, vision and dental coverage
  • Paid time off for vacation - in your first year, you’ll start with 3 weeks (prorated in to your start date)
  • 403(b) with a match of up to 3%
  • Unlimited sick and personal time - if you need it, use it
  • After your first year of employment, 40 hours paid time off for community service; paid parental leave; and time and budget for your professional development (we assess this PD budget annually)
