Graphic Design Instructor (Full-time)

Position Summary:

The ideal candidate profile for this position is someone who thrives in a dynamic, fast paced and driven environment; enjoys a challenge, consistently meets, or exceeds, expectations; possesses a strong customer service focus and a “can do” attitude; and instinctively knows who his or her target audience is and how to effectively “speak” to that demographic. The successful applicants will possess a passion for their craft supplemented by the ability to share their knowledge, follow a set curriculum, and inspire our students to be the best they can be in their chosen field of study.

Reporting to the Program Director of Art and Design, the incumbent will successfully contribute to the growth of the graphic design department.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Faculty positions are predicated on three contributing areas: Academic leadership, administrative duties & service and community engagement; teaching & curriculum and professional development.

  • ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP, ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES & SERVICE AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Academic Leadership

Students

  • Enhance the student learning experience and provides them with mentorship
  • Advise and support students to achieve their educational goals through formal/informal advising and efficiently completing college administrative tasks (e.g. Attendance, submitting grades and administrative forms: Academic integrity, Grade change, Field trip forms etc.)
  • Facilitate approved learning accommodations by working with Academic Advisors in Student Services to accommodate students with special needs. (e.g. alternative assessment options, increased assignment timelines, accessible course content, or level and nature of classroom participation)
  • Display a commitment to efficiently completing college administrative tasks

Faculty

  • Encourage faculty to collaborate with one another and engage with the greater community
  • Assist, mentor and orientate new faculty
  • Engage in peer-observation activities (as part of the LCV Faculty Development Review) and provide feedback to faculty
  • Work with the Program Director and/or Chief Academic Officer to select and hire, and faculty
  • Display a commitment to participate in faculty meetings, forums and program level reviews

Service and Community Engagement

  • Serve on various committees (e.g. 1-2 standing, ad hoc committees & hiring committee), advisory boards, working groups, Educational Council as assigned by the program director and/or required
  • Represent the college at local, regional, state, or national educational and industry specific events where required and necessary for the discipline
  • Represent the department at college hosted events (e.g. All-Schools meetings, Commencement, Industry Spotlight, Open House, Orientation, Portfolio Show, etc.) to ensure maximum departmental representation
  • Display a commit to providing service to the college, faculty and students
  • TEACHING & CURRICULUM

Teach 16-20* sections each calendar/academic year, as assigned by the Program Director for Art and Design and/or Chief Academic Officer

(*Sections are subject to change in regard to the priorities of the department)

Teaching

  • Demonstrate a passion for student-centred teaching and displaying flexibility in teaching style while effectively planning and preparing for classes
  • Adhere to the scheduled class times for teaching classes, maintain office hours and attend meetings at the designated times. Promptly informing the Program Director of any necessary changes and obtaining approval for any alterations in class times or locations
  • Establish a student-centred classroom environment and engaging students in the learning process
  • Manage the learning environment through administering the college’s academic and attendance policies. (e.g. Take and submit attendance for every class, assign grades and maintain course/student records by established deadlines)
  • Communicate effectively with students and respond to students in a timely manner.

(e.g. via LCV internal communication system, email, or online conferencing and messaging tools)

  • Schedule, supervise, debrief, and evaluate students in clinical, internship, observation, field experience, and similar work integrated learning settings as appropriate for the course or program. (As applicable to Internship coordinator)
  • Display a commit to pursuing teaching excellence

Curriculum & Quality Assurance

  • Contribute and engage in the creation of curriculum, new programs, updating of existing programs, and quality assurance documentation (e.g. Program level review process, self-studies, renewals etc. for the department). This includes identifying recommendations, and/or implementing program changes
  • Design, develop and deliver course curriculum (e.g. course outline, assignments and rubrics, course handouts, lectures, labs, studios, and presentations) and instructional plans which includes scaffold learning and sparks curiosity, engagement and promotes research practices among students
  • Facilitate student learning, provide effective instruction, and feedback, and perform evaluations of student learning for all assigned classes, using each course's standard course outline as a guide and adhering to a student-centered approach
  • Work with other faculty and administrators in developing program curriculum, standards and policies, including reviewing and participating in textbook selection process where appropriate
  • Attend Program Advisory Committee meeting (as necessary
  • Support the compliance requirements for regulatory bodies, e.g. DQAB, PTIB
  • Display a commit to adhere to curriculum and quality assurance best practices
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • Participate fully in the Faculty Development Review process
  • Complete the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) offered by the college. (Within the first two years of employment)
  • Remain current in academic or program discipline, through any number of activities: professional membership in associations, conference attendance, industry practices, maintaining licensure or certification
  • Engage in continuing education through course work, workshops, MOOCs, etc. as per individual development plan
  • Participate in LCV sponsored professional development activities and events.
  • Display a commit to continuous learning and a growth mindset
  • OTHER
  • Maintain a presence on campus with regular office hours for student support and offer support as directed by the Program Director or the Chief Academic Officer
  • Relate and apply professional experience to enhance learning though incorporating industry perspectives and relevant industry trends into courses
  • Contribute to a respectful and supportive workplace environment based on the principles of inclusion, equity and diversity
  • Fulfill expectations as set out in the approved Strategic Plan by the Board of Directors
  • Participate in special projects as directed by the Chief Academic Officer
  • Perform other academically related duties as assigned by the Program Director or the Chief Academic Officer

Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s Degree ( minimum) in graphic design or another related discipline (i.e. Visual communication, Fine Arts etc.). Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years related and increasingly responsible experience in Academics or industry
  • Educational /teacher training or advanced certification preferred
  • Excellent computer literacy skills and proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud especially Adobe Photoshop, illustrator & InDesig and Microsoft Office 365
  • Sustainable Graphic Design Ambassador

Skills:

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills, including the ability to build successful relationships with faculty team, students, staff and other stakeholders.
