Job Overview


The occupant of this position looks to create and promote an organizational culture of employee and workplace safety. Reporting to the Safety Manager and Construction Manager the candidate will assist with matters related to occupational health and safety law including; develop initiatives in collaboration with others that are aimed at raising safety awareness; increase employee knowledge of safe work practices; develop health and safety programs; conduct health and safety assessments, conduct follow-up investigations to accidents and incidents; and develop/deliver training programs and manage the company tools and asset program.



Key Responsibilities



  • Visiting jobsites to perform inspections, incident investigations, toolbox talks, hazard assessment

  • Creating signage for jobsites; ensuring site First Aid kits are stocked and employees have all necessary PPE.

  • Assisting with the creation, development, maintenance and communication of Division 15’s Safety Program

  • Promoting company safety culture

  • Working with various departments and with general contractors and subcontractors to ensure compliance with company, federal and local safety regulations and programs.

  • Providing OH&S training and fit testing to staff (subject to TTT certification)

  • Maintaining company and employee safety records and assisting with identification of trends and/or areas for improvement

  • Participating in safety committees

  • Staying on top of developments in OH&S regulation, legislation, best practice, and current events including pandemics or epidemics

  • Administering First Aid for office, fabrication shop, and on jobsites as needed.

  • Work towards NHSA then NCSO Certificates.


 


Required Competencies and Qualifications



  • Construction Safety Officer introductory course required (e.g. BCIT Construction 1100) preferred

  • Occupational First Aid

  • 2-5 years of experience, preferably in the construction industry

  • Strong commitment to occupational health and safety, and organizational safety culture

  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety; and related legislation, regulations, standards, best practices and guidelines

  • Excellent organization, interpersonal, and communication (written and verbal) skills

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

  • Must be comfortable working as part of a team and also independently

  • Must be comfortable speaking in front of groups

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Good attendance and performance record

  • Class 5 Driver’s License and personal vehicle; ability and willingness to visit jobsites throughout the lower mainland


 


Note that the position requires a vehicle, as it entails visiting different jobsites on a weekly basis across the lower mainland. Toolbox Talks/ site visits will need to start when the sites open, and therefore the start time for this position can be as early as 6:00am.
