Job Description - Health, Safety and Environment Specialist

The HSE Specialist ensures the company’s Health, Safety, and Environmental standards are maintained across all operations. This role provides strategic direction, develops and implements HSE policies and procedures, monitors safety performance, and supports a proactive safety culture. The successful candidate works closely with operations leaders, cross-functional teams, and senior management to drive alignment on safety initiatives and ensure compliance with legislation, client requirements, and internal standards.



Responsibilities 



  • Travel regularly to remote field locations across North America to support field teams and ensure HSE expectations are met

  • Be based in the Edmonton region and hold a valid driver’s license and passport

  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with operations leaders, cross-functional teams, and senior management to align safety efforts across the company

  • Drive and sustain a proactive, collaborative safety culture with key internal and external stakeholders

  • Provide strategic direction by developing, implementing, and monitoring HSE goals, objectives, priorities, and procedures across business units

  • Develop and maintain HSE policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legislation and client requirements

  • Lead safety meetings and deliver corporate safety updates

  • Conduct monthly, company-wide safety performance audits

  • Maintain accurate safety records, metrics, and statistics; track trends and report on performance

  • Ensure compliance and good standing with COR, ISN, ComplyWorks, WCB, insurance providers, and related programs

  • Oversee competency evaluations, training programs, safety orientations, and onboarding for new and existing employees

  • Ensure employees receive required safety training and ongoing HSE support



Qualities 



  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field

  • Minimum of 10 years of direct field-related HSE supervision experience

  • Strong knowledge of HSE legislation, standards, and best practices

  • Experience developing and implementing HSE policies, procedures, and training programs

  • Proven ability to lead safety initiatives and influence a proactive safety culture

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across all levels of an organization



  • Strong interpersonal, administrative and leadership skills are required.

  • Motivated, self-starter who works well unsupervised and within a team environment.

  • An effective communicator with the ability to develop positive working relationships across a multitude of business units.

  • Exercises good judgment on complex decisions.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Strong coordination, influencing and organizational skills.

  • Commitment to improving the operations and generating cost reduction opportunities.

  • Self-motivated and leads by example.

  • Ability to independently manage a diverse workload with changing priorities.

  • Excellent Microsoft applications skills
