Position Summary:

Are you an insurance professional enrolled in a CIP course, early in your career and ready for a new and exciting challenge?  Come join our rapidly growing team of claims experts on the ground floor and lead the expansion of our market-leading Canadian operation.

We are looking for a motivated Liability Claims Adjuster to support our Auto and General Liability operations, with a good understanding of Auto Property Damage and Liability claims.

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to help build and grow our Helmsman business in Canada. You’ll handle a wide variety of in-house claims, from large Fortune 500 Corporations, initially focusing on Automobile and General Liability.

This includes reviewing reports from independent field adjusters, lawyers, and experts with the goal of determining coverage and assessing damages and referring to Company SSI (special service Instructions) & their policy coverage and self-insured retention.

The focus will be to achieve expeditious and economical settlements within prescribed authority limits.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and settle the loss to determine coverage and claim disposition. 
  • Establish appropriate reserves for both indemnity and expense, and review on a regular basis to ensure adequacy. Make recommendations for reserves at appropriate level for claims outside of authority level.
  • Identify and communicate specific claim trends and account or policy issues to management, underwriting and risk services. Prepare comprehensive reports as required.  
  • Pro-actively manage the case-resolution process.  Actively participate in market meetings, mediations, and arbitrations as well as negotiation discussions within limit of settlement authority.
  • Support claims marketing services by meeting with brokers, risk managers and reinsurers.
  • Prepare for and facilitate claim reviews with clients.
  • Provide oversight to claims being managed by Independent Adjusters to ensure Helmsman quality standards are maintained.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelors' and/or advanced degree/diploma (experience may be substituted for education).
  • 2-3 years of related claims experience, including auto and general liability.
  • Candidates with a completed CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional) designation or those who are actively pursuing the CIP will be given preference.
  • Knowledge of claims handling concepts, practices and techniques, to include but not limited to coverage issues, and product line knowledge.
  • Demonstrated superior verbal and written communications skills.
  • Intermediate level of analytical, decision making and negotiation skills
  • Approximate travel required 20% within Ontario.
