The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. The Program 


 


The Roofs for Youth (R4Y) program is a Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF) funded program that operates within the Calgary Homeless Serving System of Care (CHSSC) to provide support for youth at risk of, or experiencing homelessness aged 15 to 29 years old; helping them successfully develop their living skills, transition to adulthood, and meet their self-defined goals for independence. Youth are either justice system involved or at risk of justice system involvement, lack stable housing, and have identified the need for intensive case-management supportYouth receive a continuum of services from housing placement, support with justice system navigation, access to employment and employability skill development, educational opportunities, connections to natural supports, basic needs support, life skills development, and intensive community-based case management. R4Y strives to be collaborative both internally and externally in our relationships with the other agencies within the CHSSC and our youth's professional and natural supports. We value creativity, advocacy, and promoting a positive, supportive agency culture. The Outreach Casework Team supports up to 30 youth through intensive case management services in the Community and in subsidized market housing settings. 



 The Position  


 


Reporting to the Team Lead, the Outreach Caseworker will be knowledgeable about the issues youth face in the cycle of homelessness and support youth to obtain housing, remain housed and successfully reintegrate into the community. The successful candidate will demonstrate a meaningful understanding of Natural Supports, Trauma-Informed, Housing First and Recovery Focused Practices. 


 


Areas of responsibility include: 



  • Creatively support a caseload of 10 community-based youth as they maintain independence by creating opportunities to support individualized goal setting and system navigation.

  • Develop plans that support an increased knowledge of independent living skills through teachable moments and skill building while working collaboratively with Casework Team and CJHS internal programs. 



  • Navigate routine and crisis situations within a youth's life with a restorative approach.  



  • Create opportunities for youth to engage in programming, including recreational, educational, and community involvement.  



  • Completdocumentation including referrals, assessments, crisis plans/risk assessments, case notes, and letters of support. 



  • Attend to team responsibilities in terms of participation, communication, and demonstrating a positive attitude. 


 


The full-time position requires:



  •  A valid Class 5 Driver’s License, 

  • A reliable vehicle

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline and two years of relevant experience working with the target population. 

  • Knowledge of the Youth Criminal Justice System is an asset.

  • The successful candidate will also have experience working with marginalized youth, supporting individuals with active addictions by maintaining strong boundaries, communication and relationship skills, crisis prevention and problem-solving skills.

  • A current criminal record check (CPIC) and Child Intervention Check are required (within the past three months). ​

  • Brain Story Certification considered an asset.
