Job Description - Housing Support Worker - Full-Time, 6 Month Term

Who We Are

Mokami is a feminist, trauma‑informed, and decolonizing organization rooted in Happy Valley–Goose Bay. We support women, gender‑diverse people, and families through advocacy, programming, and community connection. Our work is grounded in values of care, choice, trust, belonging, and safety, and we honour lived experience as expertise.

We are a small, passionate team in a period of meaningful growth. As our community evolves, so does our work. We are looking for someone who can grow with us, someone who is flexible, curious, grounded, and committed to community wellbeing.

Applicants must live in Happy Valley–Goose Bay or be willing to relocate.

About the Role

This role is part of a supportive team that sustains Mokami’s Supportive Living Program (SLP), offering care, connection, and consistency within a trauma-informed, harm reduction framework. Housing Support Workers (HSWs) contribute to a circle of care that centres empathy, dignity, belonging, and safety for women and gender-diverse people who call Mokami home.

HSWs help foster a welcoming, inclusive environment where residents feel respected and supported. They meet residents where they are at, offering support that is responsive to individual needs, strengths, and readiness. HSWs walk alongside residents in identifying and working toward goals that are meaningful to them, supporting autonomy and choice.

Working as part of a collaborative team, HSWs contribute to ongoing, wrap-around support for residents, ensuring continuity of care across shifts. They offer and support access to programming that builds connection, life skills, and well-being. HSWs use compassionate communication, de-escalation, and mediation to both prevent and respond to crises, always grounding their work in respect, understanding, and relationship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the SLP team and SLP Coordinator to provide consistent, wrap-around support to residents, contributing to a 24/7 continuum of care

  • Build supportive, trusting relationships with SLP residents and community members

  • Offer emotional and practical support, centring dignity, choice, and individual strengths

  • Respond to emotionally charged situations and crises using trauma-informed, de-escalation, and conflict resolution approaches

  • Welcome SLP residents and visitors by answering phones and door entries in a warm and respectful manner

  • Distribute harm reduction supplies and personal care items with care, respect, and without judgment

  • Support individuals in navigating Mokami programs and broader community resources

  • Maintain accurate and confidential documentation using clear, respectful, and non-stigmatizing language

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary partners (e.g., social workers, healthcare providers, outreach teams) to support the holistic well-being of SLP residents

  • Conduct regular apartment checks to support health, safety, and supportive living agreements

  • Assist with the planning and facilitation of SLP programs

  • Support program logistics, including food preparation, room setup, and cleanup

  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to open, collaborative communication and shared learning

  • Contribute to the care and upkeep of common spaces to support a welcoming environment

  • Support seasonal tasks (e.g., snow clearing at entrances) to ensure safety and accessibility

  • Participate in other responsibilities as needed to support the Mokami community

Skills and Qualifications

  • Education or training in social sciences, community studies, mental health and addictions, social work, psychology, or a related field

  • Experience supporting individuals in community-based, non-profit, or supportive living/housing environments

  • A demonstrated commitment to Mokami’s values

  • A collaborative, kind, and respectful approach to teamwork

  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a connected, collaborative team

  • Knowledge and application of harm reduction, trauma-informed, feminist, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive approaches

  • Understanding of gender-based violence, systemic barriers, and the experiences of women and gender-diverse people

  • Cultural humility, with awareness of Indigenous cultures and the ongoing impacts of intergenerational trauma

  • Commitment to equity, with experience working in spaces that centre the voices and leadership of those impacted by gender-based violence, criminalization, colonialism, and other systemic barriers

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Comfort with basic computer tasks and documentation systems

  • Understanding of confidentiality, boundaries, and ethical, relationship-based support

  • A calm, thoughtful, and solution-focused approach

Working Conditions

  • Full-time, 6 month-term position, with possibility of extension

  • Shift Work (Schedule includes 10 and 12-hour shifts with a rotation of days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays)
