Job Description - HR Manager, Canada (Confidential Search)

THE ORGANIZATION

Our client, a global leader in their industry with longevity in business and a strong track record of success, has a need for a HR Manager to lead their Canadian operations with the role being based in Edmonton. This organization is highly established, has a strong reputation in market and continues to grow and thrive. THE OPPORTUNITY

The HR Manager will oversee all human resource functions in Canada including overseeing the human resources team, compensation and benefits, recruitment, employee relations, policy and procedures, HR programs, the HRIS system, employment legislation, and special projects. The HR Manager will be pivotal in change management, policy development and revision, and fostering successful partnerships with internal teams. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills and maintain a positive and approachable attitude.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of the company and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following core competencies, experience, and attributes:

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Collaborate with the Finance department to design and execute competitive compensation structures aligned with the company's strategic objectives and market trends.
  • Partner with the Finance department to oversee the administration of salary, incentives, bonuses, and benefits programs to ensure fairness and compliance with legal requirements.
  • Create, revise, and enforce compensation and benefits policies in accordance with federal and provincial regulations.
  • Effectively communicate compensation and benefits information to employees, ensuring clarity and understanding of available options and policies.
  • Provide guidance and support to managers and employees on compensation-related issues and inquiries.
  • Ensure all compensation practices comply with legal standards.

Talent Acquisition:

  • Design and implement effective recruitment strategies to attract top talent and meet organizational needs.
  • Oversee the entire recruitment process, from job posting and candidate sourcing to interviewing, selection, and onboarding.
  • Partner with department heads and hiring managers to understand staffing requirements and develop job descriptions and specifications.
  • Analyze recruitment metrics and trends to assess the effectiveness of recruitment strategies and make data-driven improvements.
  • Coordinate the onboarding process for new hires, ensuring a smooth transition and integration into the organization.
  • Promote diversity and inclusion in recruitment practices, ensuring a fair and unbiased hiring process.

Management:

  • Oversee and manage the Human Resources team, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
  • Create, update, and enforce HR policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal standards and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Address and resolve employee relations issues, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Develop and implement initiatives to enhance employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention.
  • Collaborate with senior management to align HR strategies with business objectives and drive organizational success.
  • Manage the HR budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and cost-effective HR practices.
  • Lead and support organizational change initiatives, ensuring effective communication and smooth transitions.
  • Develop and implement succession plans to ensure leadership continuity and address future staffing needs.

HR Legal & Policies:

  • Create, update, and enforce comprehensive HR policies and procedures to align with organizational goals and legal requirements.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all relevant labor laws and regulations at federal, provincial, and local levels.
  • Manage and resolve HR-related legal claims, including employee disputes, and disciplinary actions, working with legal counsel when required.
  • Regularly review and audit HR policies and practices to ensure ongoing compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Communicate HR policies to employees and provide training to ensure understanding and adherence.
  • Work closely with legal advisors to interpret and apply labor laws and regulations, and to address complex HR issues.
  • Conduct thorough investigations of employee complaints and issues, ensuring fair and impartial handling of each case.

Employee Experience:

  • Review existing practices continuing to develop and elevate the employee experience journey.
  • Promote and maintain a positive workplace culture that reflects the organization’s values and mission.
  • Build an onboarding and retention plan that promotes employee learning, development, engagement, and an overall positive experience with the organization, increasing longevity and retention of the team.

  • Build trusting relationships in which HR is seen as a business partner that is valued in supporting business operations.
  • Utilize your change management skills in elevating and transitioning the organization from a mindset of “we have always done it this way” to a culture of innovation, change and learning for operational progression.
  • Review and elevate all policies and procedures ensuring alignment to employment standards legislation.
  • Increase the employee experience, where each day is a day, they love to come to work, be a part of the vision and mission of the organization and where they share this experience with others increasing the talent pipeline and retention of the team.

THE INDIVIDUAL

Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of the company and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following core competencies, experience, and attributes:

Education

  • Post-secondary education with a specialization in Human Resources or a related field is ideal, with consideration being given to employment experience only.
  • CPHR designation is an asset.

Experience

  • 10+ years in Human Resources having experienced all aspects of HR as a generalist.
  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership capacity having led teams towards a common vision and mission.
  • Experienced in learning and development and budget management is an asset.
  • Experience in an industrial setting such as manufacturing, distribution or plant operations would be an asset.
  • Familiar with employment standards legislation across the different provinces is a requirement.
  • Familiarity with unions and labour relations would be valued but not a requirement.

  • Highly experienced where nothing phases you in HR, as you have “been there, done that”.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and update comprehensive HR policies, ensuring alignment with current regulations and best practices.
  • Proven track record of supporting people operations and building trust through effective communication and reliable, empathetic service.
  • Consistently enhances workplace morale with a positive, upbeat attitude.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with leadership and employees.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is hybrid, under the conditions that the successful candidate will be in the Edmonton office 3-4 days a week, which is subject to change depending on the needs of the team.
