The Ontario Tech Student Union, lovingly referred to as the OTSU, is a not-for-profit organization that aims to enhance the student experience at Ontario Tech University. We’re a small team comprised of full-time management staff, Full-time unionized staff, part-time staff, and our elected Student Executives and Board of Directors. Our offerings to students include essential services, extracurricular clubs, a health and dental plan, an esports community, and advocacy. SUMMARY

The Human Resources (HR) Generalist is responsible for supporting the organization’s HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement, labour and employee relations, learning and development, health and safety, HR planning, benefits administration, and performance management as directed by the Executive Director. This role also supports general operational functions of the organization, including oversight of front desk customer service staff and coordination of operational administrative tasks. In addition, the HR Generalist serves as the organization’s Chief Returning Officer (CRO) for student elections and related electoral processes as directed by the Boards elections committee.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Human Resources

• Maintains accurate, up-to-date, and confidential personnel records and HR documentation. 


• Assists in the administration of HR and labour relations functions, including collective agreement interpretation and compliance with employment legislation.


• Supports the development and implementation of HR policies, procedures, reports, job descriptions, and employment documentation. 


• Leads full-cycle recruitment processes, including job postings, resume screening, interviews, onboarding, and exit interviews.


• Oversees employee onboarding, orientation, and training processes. 


• Supports managers with performance management processes and employee development initiatives. 


• Conducts investigations and supports conflict resolution related to workplace and HR matters. 


• Supports occupational health and safety initiatives and Joint Health & Safety Committee activities. 


• Acts as back-up support for payroll administration when required. 

Operations

• Provides day-to-day supervision of Customer Service Representative (CSR) staff. 


• Develops and maintains CSR schedules and operational coverage. 


• Participates in the hiring, training, and supervision of front-line staff. 


• Approves CSR timesheets and supports administrative coordination.


• Coordinates operational requests with university departments, including maintenance and IT services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education 

• Degree or diploma in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 


• CHRP designation is required.

Experience 

• Minimum two (2) years of experience in human resources or employee relations. 


• Experience working within a unionized environment.


• Experience within a post-secondary or non-profit environment is considered an asset.
  

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge of relevant employment legislation and HR best practices. 


• Knowledge and understanding of unionized work environments and collective agreements. 


• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. 


• Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information professionally. 


• Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. 


• Ability to work independently while supporting a collaborative team environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position may require occasional evening and weekend work during events, elections, or organizational initiatives. Work is primarily performed in an office environment with periodic travel between campus locations and attendance at organizational events. The role may require flexibility in scheduling and the ability to work effectively within a fast-paced and evolving organizational environment.
