ROLE: Centre Director, Residential Juniors Program at UBC


 


REPORTS TO: Director of Junior Programs and Groups, Canada


 


DURATION OF PROGRAM: 6 weeks – June 29 to August 10, 2025


 


Start Date: April 21, 2025 (part-time to start)


 


ILSC Junior Camps is seeking an experienced, qualified, and dynamic leader to take overall responsibility for the successful delivery of a residential ESL summer youth program. The position will require the selected candidate to reside on campus during the full duration of the program, leading a team of 10+ staff members in the safe and successful completion of a summer program aimed at international youth. 


 


In addition to this coordination, the Centre Director, Residential Juniors Program at UBC, is responsible for creating a structured, caring, and supportive environment for our young students through monitoring their attendance, performance, well-being and general success within the program. The role requires developed organizational skills, a high sense of responsibility, exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, a willingness to take initiative and an ability to problem-solve. 


 


This is a key management role and a full-time, fixed-term position. Due to the nature of the work, your hours may vary and may be irregular. The Centre Director is required to live on-site at the residence. Accommodation and meals are included during this summer post.  


 
The schedule timeline and hourly requirements are as follows: 


·       Full time hours will begin on May 19, 2025.



  • Full time hours on-site at UBC will begin on June 29, 2025, and last until August 10, 2025 

  • Pre-program staff training at UBC will take place from June 23, 2025, to June 27, 2025 



  • Your weekly work schedule will consist of six consecutive days of work, followed by one full day off per week 

  • Remuneration is $1275/week 
     


Duties and Responsibilities 


The job duties of this position include, but are not limited to: 


 


Recruitment 



  • In collaboration with the Director of Juniors Programs, will participate in the interviewing and hiring of the Academic Manager and Activity Manager positions  

  • In collaboration with the Academic Manager, will participate in the interviewing and hiring of the teachers 

  • In collaboration with the Activity Manager, will participate in the interviewing and hiring of the on-site and off-site activity leaders  


Program Set-up and Closure 



  • Unpack and pack all program materials and resources at the beginning and end of the program and monitor usage, reporting any missing or damaged materials 

  • Conduct pre-program and post-program damage inventory with school/university authorities 

  • Ensure that the UBC rooms and facilities are set up and prepared for the staff and students’ arrival, including signage, first day transfers and staff rosters 


Residence Accommodations 



  • Liaise with the UBC university representative to ensure open and frequent communication and that residence accommodation standards are maintained, particularly in areas such as food quality and cleaning 

  • Produce accurate reports for school/university and Director of Juniors Programs on meals, beds, classroom usage, and any or all incidents and damages. 

  • Ensure that all ILSC Juniors Program rules, procedures and directives are understood and adhered to by both students and staff  

  • Supervise center banking arrangements and ensure safe transfer and storage of all finances and documents 

  • Maintain accurate financial accounting records for the program, monitoring expenditures to ensure expenses are within budget, ensuring student-teacher ratios are respected, tracking leisure costs, managing petty cash, and itemizing expenditures at the end of the program 

  • Liaise with school/university staff for use of additional facilities, following approval from Director of Junior Programs 


Staff 



  • Co-ordinate and lead the pre-program staff orientation with the support of the Activity Manager and Academic Manager, ensuring that all team members have a clear understanding of the Juniors summer program, their roles, and responsibilities, and that all staffing schedules have been clearly outlined and shared with staff 

  • Conduct regular staff meetings; carry out necessary training and performance evaluations, reporting any concerns or issues to the Director of Junior Programs. 

  • Monitor staff working hours and periods of rest, creating staffing schedules (with the support of the Academic Manager and Activity Manager) 

  • Distribute and collect program feedback questionnaires from all staff members and conduct staff evaluations 

  • In collaboration with the Activities Manager, schedule weekly meetings with Group Leaders (chaperones accompanying a group of students employed by travel agency) 

  • Assign staff to assist with student airport arrivals and departures (typically on Sundays but may occur on other days) 


Students 



  • Welcome students on the first day, introducing the staff and explaining the academic, social and welfare responsibilities of each Juniors program staff member 

  • Ensure students understand school rules, disciplinary procedures, and off-limit areas. 

  • Oversee collection of damage deposits, passports, fees, and flight tickets 

  • Oversee and co-ordinate all transport arrangements and the departures of students on weekends, checking beds and facilities, collecting keys as appropriate, escorting students etc. 

  • Manage student and staff welfare and disciplinary issues during the program including student illness and employment issues 


Other 



  • Manage the program’s daily schedule, creating the staff schedule, monitoring the performance of the Juniors program staff as well as the satisfaction levels of the students (through First Impressions Reports, End-of Program Questionnaires, and first-hand evaluations) 



  • Submit a weekly report to the Director of Juniors Programs on day-to-day events during the program 

  • Participate in weekly meetings with the Academics Manager, Activities Manager and Director of Junior Programs 

  • Take overall responsibility for disciplinary matters in consultation with the Activities Manager, Academic Manager and Director of Juniors Programs 

  • Welcome visitors to the program as required (e.g., third party agents, colleagues from ILSC, language agencies, accrediting inspectors etc.) 


 


Skills and Attributes 


 


Essential 



  • Experience managing a team of 10+ staff members 

  • Experience of working with children and teenagers in an overnight camp or residential setting 

  • Experience with program management  

  • Strong organizational and communication skills 


Desirable  



  • TESL Qualification 

  • Background in Education, Sports Management, Event Planning, or Leisure Studies 

  • Advanced CPR / First Aid / Lifeguard certification 

  • Bilingualism: English
