Job Description - Indigenous Conservation Storyteller

Job Title:          Indigenous Conservation Storyteller  


Reporting To:  Director, Indigenous Initiatives 


Job Purpose:  The Indigenous Conservation Storyteller is responsible for capturing and sharing compelling stories that celebrate collaborative conservation efforts between BC First Nations, local communities, and governments. This role raises awareness of the BC Parks Foundation and BC Conservation Fund’s impact by fostering understanding, engagement, and excitement for Indigenous leadership in conservation and stewardship through authentic storytelling.

You are: 



  • A culturally sensitive storyteller, comfortable in holding the role of a witness within First Nations communities, with experience in navigating Indigenous cultures and protocols

  • An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills to foster positive relationships with diverse communities and people

  • Experienced in long-form journalism, feature writing, or a similar writing style as well as publications or similar projects that showcase strong editorial and project management skills


Role Summary:


The Indigenous Conservation Storyteller will lead storytelling efforts for the BC Conservation Fund and support the BC Parks Foundation in its vision. The Storyteller will develop and produce long-form features, multimedia content, and print materials that authentically convey the impact of Indigenous-led collaborative conservation and stewardship efforts across BC. Additionally, this role supports the communications and fundraising teams through the creation of content featuring First Nations people and communities in a way that upholds high standards of cultural integrity and accuracy, as well as assisting in the capture of photo and video assets to enhance storytelling. The Storyteller will work to strengthen the Foundation’s relationships with BC First Nations, industry, and government partners and will contribute to public engagement and support for Indigenous led conservation through direct outreach, attending events, fostering relationships with media outlets, and producing an annual publication that consolidates key stories and conservation successes.


 


Responsibilities: 


Community Engagement, Relationship Building & Communications Support 



  • Identify and document compelling conservation stories through direct community engagement and relationship building



  • Develop and write long-form features and short-form content that highlight the collaborative stewardship and conservation efforts of BC First Nations, conservation communities, and government



  • Support BCPF communications team to capture content and stories for the quarterly and annual report, newsletters, etc. and support the repurposing of content for different platforms



  • Support the BCPF fundraising team and the BC Conservation Fund’s fundraising efforts by creating engaging content to highlight projects and their impacts



  • Capture photography and/or video during key community engagement trips and stewardship events



  • Develop content for the BC Conservation Fund website and related Indigenous-led project landing pages


Media, Events & Publications 



  • Build relationships with journalists and media outlets to expand the reach of stories covered



  • Support BC Parks Foundation’s public relations efforts by providing story content to pitch to media outlets



  • Work with the BC Parks Foundation’s content team to develop multimedia storytelling through video, photography, and digital media



  • Identify, develop materials for, and attend conferences and events to share stories with the public and partners 



  • Conceptualize, manage, and produce an annual publication consolidating features, content, and additional stories


Qualifications & Experience: 



  • University degree in journalism, creative writing, communications, or related degree; or an equivalent combination of schooling, and at least 2 years of experience in journalism, creative writing, content writing, communications, or related field

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and an understanding of cultural protocols

  • Deep knowledge of BC, and First Nations in BC

  • Experience with photography 

  • A valid BC driver’s license


Skills and Experience Considered an Asset: 



  • Lived experience in a First Nations community

  • Experience with videography 

  • Background in environmental conservation or a strong passion for nature

  • Experience working with government and/or governmental organizations

Work Environment: 



  • This is a full-time, permanent role based out of the Foundation’s Vancouver office 

  • Candidates are required to live in BC

  • The position will work a hybrid schedule of 1-2 days in office, depending on operational needs. However, for the right candidate, the Foundation is willing to be flexible with remote work and schedule
