Job Description - Inspector, BPV

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is a not-for-profit regulator dedicated to enhancing public safety across Ontario. TSSA's team of over 450 professionals delivers safety oversight across multiple regulated sectors through technical expertise, compliance, and collaboration with industry partners. At TSSA, safety is embedded in our culture and in all aspects of our work. Each role at TSSA has an impact on keeping Ontarians safe through engagement, evidence, enforcement, and education. We help build a safer community.

At TSSA, inspectors make a difference for Ontarians every day. Out in the field, you’ll connect with regulated parties and help them meet safety requirements through your expertise and education initiatives. Your work builds trust, enhances compliance and strengthens the systems that keep people safe. You will have a direct impact on public safety across the province, supported by a professional, collaborative, purpose-driven team.

Your Key Contributions:

  • Promote Public Health: Conduct in-service and periodic inspections of boilers, pressure vessels, piping systems, and related equipment to confirm compliance with the Technical Standards and Safety Act and applicable BPV regulations.

  • Support Compliance Through Incident Response: As assigned, investigate BV-related incidents, equipment failures, and public safety concerns to identify root causes and recommend actions that reduce future risk.

  • Apply Regulatory Authority: Exercise Provincial Offences Officer responsibilities by directing regulated parties to correct non-compliance, up to and including ordering cessation of operation when required.

  • Assess Technical Competency: Evaluate repairs, alterations, on-site fabrication, piping installations, and owner/contractor quality programs to verify alignment with codes, standards, and regulatory expectations.

  • Maintain Accurate Compliance Records: Document inspection findings, incident information, and regulatory decisions in TSSA systems to support consistent oversight and evidence-based decision-making.

  • Support Stakeholders and Promote Awareness: Provide clear guidance on BPV codes and standards, helping operators, contractors and engineers understand regulatory requirements and adopt safe practices.

Your Qualifications & Key Strengths:

Certifications in Progress:

  • Eligible to write or maintain the Ontario Certificate of Competency and National Board credentials such as In-Service (IS), Authorized Inspector (AI), R, N, C and I endorsements, as required for assigned work.

  • Able to obtain and maintain Nuclear Energy Worker status when nuclear inspections apply.

Technical Background:

  • Bring a minimum of five years of relevant BPV-industry experience, supported by strong knowledge of the Technical Standards and Safety Act, BPV Regulation, Operating Engineers Regulation, and applicable CSA, ASME, and National Board Codes.

  • Apply advanced analytical and problem-solving skills when performing inspections, conducting incident investigations, reviewing repairs/alterations, and assessing piping or OE plant operations.

  • Use MS Office and business systems effectively to maintain inspection records, prepare reports, and support consistent regulatory oversight.

  • Communicate technical and regulatory information clearly to internal and external stakeholders through strong written and verbal communication skills.

Travel Requirements:

  • Daily travel required; therefore, a valid Ontario Class G driver's license and driving record suitable for fieldwork are essential.
