Job Description - Instructor, Open Studies (Various Subject Areas)

Academic Services is focused on supporting SAIT’s schools and departments in their pursuit of SAIT’s strategic priorities.  Academic Services brings together several academic development, delivery, and quality assurance units with a common goal: student success.  Academic Services provides unique, flexible support programing designed to help learners succeed in their chosen SAIT career program.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Academic Chair, Open Studies, you will join a diverse instructional team supporting adult learners across a range of academic disciplines. Open Studies courses serve a wide variety of learners, including those completing prerequisites for career programs and exploratory and lifelong learners.

This posting is to build a qualified instructor pool for course sections offered during the 2025-2026 academic year (July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026). Instructors may be considered for opportunities across Fall, Winter, and Spring terms, based on subject-matter expertise, delivery mode experience, and program needs.

You will professionally facilitate the students' learning process and support students in achieving established learning outcomes to the maximum of their potential. You will make use of all available resources, methods, techniques and strategies to ensure student success. You will hold students accountable for Academic Integrity and will bring forward cases of suspected Academic Dishonesty.

Open Studies offers courses in a range of disciplines, including but not limited to:

•    English and Communications

•    Ethics and Philosophy

•    Health Sciences (e.g. Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology, Pathology)

•    Mathematics and Statistics

•    Sciences (e.g. Biology, Environmental Science, General Science)

•    Social Sciences

•    Computer Literacy and Information Technology

•    Business Mathematics and Professional Skills

•    Hospitality and Tourism

•    Student Preparation and Career Readiness

Note: SAIT, as a post-secondary institution, serves a diverse student population. Therefore, instructional duties may occasionally be required during early mornings, evenings, and weekends. If selected, specific scheduling arrangements will be discussed between you and the leader.

\nThe Role
  • Facilitate courses, lesson plans, lectures, and learning activities. 
  • Adhere to the course outline, including weighting of assessments.
  • Prepare, deliver, and grade all assessments, and adhere to the final grade deadline.
  • Deliver courses through remote delivery tools (e.g., Teams, Zoom, Brightspace) is required. Instructors may not change the delivery mode of the course.
  • Evaluate student progress and facilitate student success, including submitting Early Support forms as needed and responding to email inquiries within two business days. 
  • Create an open and inclusive learning environment and show personal interest in student success.  
  • Collaborate with faculty colleagues teaching the same course or subject to support consistency across sections, where possible.  
  • Provide ongoing support, guidance and advice to learners and potential learners. 
  • Comply with the Alberta Human Rights Commission’s Duty to Accommodate for all qualified students experiencing learning challenges in post-secondary institutions.
  • Promote and support SAIT’s strategic and academic plans. 
  • Adhere to all of SAIT’s policies and procedures. 
  • Stay aware of emerging pedagogical issues and educational technologies.
  • Attend program orientations, meetings, and training activities, where possible.
  • Respond to Academic Chair’s request for information within two business days.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Master’s degree or higher in the relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of one-year post-secondary teaching experience in a relevant discipline.
  • Subject-matter expertise in relevant course content.
  • Graduate education and/or work experience in adult education would be an asset.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience teaching in learning management systems such as Brightspace/D2L are required.
  • Experience teaching in a variety of teaching delivery modalities, including face-to-face, online, and blended.
  • Ability to collaborate with Academic Chairs and faculty across Open Studies and SAIT.
