IP Advisor (Independent Contractor)

Are you passionate about innovation and intellectual property (IP) management? Are you experienced in guiding founders and executives through the intricate landscape of IP rights and strategies? We are seeking a knowledgeable and dynamic IP expert to join our team of Advisors.

As an IP Advisor, you will play a pivotal role in assisting local tech startups and scaleups in safeguarding their IP and fostering innovation. This advisor role will work with clients participating in all IO Venture Path programs, supporting companies at various stages of growth and across a wide range of industries and sectors.

Our Advisors

Our Advisors are independent contractors typically with their own thriving consulting practices. They are available between 10-15 hours per month and paid the standard advisor rate of $150/hour. Please note that these hours are not guaranteed and will depend on client demand each month.

Reporting to Invest Ottawa’s Director, Venture Services, the IP Advisor will support IO Venture Path clients by:

• Providing tailored guidance on IP strategies, including patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret considerations.


• Guiding clients in identifying and safeguarding their IP assets.


• Collaborating with our team and partners to ensure the consistent delivery of IP programs to benefit our clients.


• Assist founders in engaging and negotiating with their IP lawyers.


• Facilitating interactive workshops and group sessions to share knowledge and foster collaborative learning on IP-related topics.


• Offering insights on emerging IP trends and industry-specific best practices to keep clients informed and competitive in their respective fields.


• Facilitating introductions and connections between clients and potential IP partners or legal experts, contributing to their growth and success.

We would love to hear from you if you:

• Have a proven track record of guiding startups in IP strategy, having worked with early-stage technology-driven ventures.


• Possess a deep understanding of IP rights, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.


• Have a well-established network within the Canadian innovation ecosystem and pre-existing relationships with key IP institutions and government-supported programs.


• Have experience mentoring and advising individuals or teams in IP-related matters.


• Can quickly assess IP challenges faced by tech companies and provide timely guidance and support.


• Have excellent emotional intelligence, enabling you to build trustful relationships and communicate effectively through active listening.


• Are passionate about seeing founders succeed but are willing to have difficult conversations to help them grow.


• Are predominantly located in the Ottawa region and can attend in-person meetings and events when necessary.

While actively practicing IP lawyers or Patent Agents may be considered for this position, it is important to emphasize that the IP Advisor role is completely independent of formal IP services. Therefore, candidates in this role must commit to refraining from providing any IP services through their independent law firms or consulting practices.
