Job Description - Izhitwaawin Anokiiwinini/ikwe Cultural Worker

The Izhitwaawin Anokiiwinini/ikwe - Cultural Worker primary role is the holistic delivery of culturally relevant land-based healing and provides service from an individually centered, family-centered, and community-based perspective In delivering culturally supportive services rooted in the Anishinaabe culture, beliefs and values of the Sagkeeng First Nation population we serve.  



Requirements: 



  • Post Secondary degree in Indigenous Studies/BSW or equivalent. 



  • Five (5) years experience working in First Nation agencies, and communities. 



  • Recognized and respected by their own community and or Sagkeeng First Nation as someone who has lived experience, a learned understanding of Anishinaabe culture; demonstrating a clean and sober life; following a traditional/cultural lifestyle.  

  • Ability or willingness to learn to conduct various ceremonies: pipe, sweat, feasts, fasts, and support or help in other various ceremonies.  

  • Experience working within Child Welfare and/or First Nation Child-Wellbeing setting would be considered an asset demonstrated knowledge of existing training in Manitoba’s child welfare system and training needs of the system. 

  • Working knowledge of the Manitoba Child and Family Services Information System (CFSIS). 

  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and fully insured vehicle 

  • Exceptional leadership, organizational and time management skills. 



  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 



  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently and as a team member in a fast paced, challenging environment. 



  • Demonstrated intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point, SharePoint, Teams) and online tools, including social media. 



  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous life-long learning and self-improvement. 



  • Must have knowledge and understanding of Sagkeeng’s customs and traditions 



  • Must have proficient knowledge regarding the comprehensive issues relating to colonization, intergenerational trauma, and residential school trauma 



  • Strong knowledge of community resources and ability to maintain professional relationships with families, colleagues and collaterals 



  • Able to work with children, adult individuals, couples, and families 



  • Experience teaching and leading land-based activities 

  • Experience in understanding how culture promotes healing 

  • The ability to speakunderstand and the willingness to learn the Ojibway language is considered an asset. 



Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Promote and support traditional First Nation cultural teachings and practice for our families, staff and community.  



  • Work with youth, children and families to provide cultural teachings and assist in the development and implementation of cultural components to the program.  



  • Using a number of spiritual practices in day-to-day tasks, which may include smudging and medicine teachings. 



  • Assist in various ceremonies during significant community events in Spirit programs.  



  • Engage in collaborative community partnerships to promote cultural teachings and practice. 



  • Assist in singing and drumming groups with all children, youth, families, staff and community members. 



  • Develop culturally appropriate traditional skill building activities for childrenyouth and families 



  • Assists in land-based healing camps and programming  



  • Supports SCFS in the delivery of culturally based and appropriate prevention programs, services, activities and support to participants of healing camps. 



  • Participates in the evaluation and ongoing improvement of land-based healing programming. 



  • Participates in systems meetings as needed or . 



  • Maintain an appropriate record and information system. Prepare annual program reports and provide accurate data. Ensure that accurate program and individual records are maintained and that confidentiality is a priority. Ensure that all pertinent registration requirements and documentation is complete. 



  • Participates in team and staff meetings, and engages in on-going team planning, program development and evaluation 



  • Maintain competency through on-going cultural development activities and act as a resource to other SCFS colleagues, individuals and the community. 



  • Travel and the ability to work flexible hours is .



Sagkeeng Community members and Indigenous candidates are encouraged to self-identify.



Qualified candidates will be required to undergo a criminal record check, child abuse registry check, and a prior contact check as a condition of employment.  Sagkeeng Community members and Indigenous candidates will be given preference and are encouraged to self-identify as being of Indigenous descent.
