Job Description - Jakej/Lobster Captain

Location: Waycobah/Cheticamp




The Jakej/Lobster Captain is responsible for the vessel, its operation, its equipment, as well as the crew on board to operate the vessel, ensure the overall health and safety of the crew and the equipment, while performing other functions as required


 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Prepare the Vessel, equipment, and fishing gear before the season, including life jackets, buoys, gear, and ropes.

  • Conduct an inventory of all gear and equipment, providing a copy to the Fisheries Manager.

  • Conduct a sea trial of the Vessel prior to the beginning of the season and note any repairs.

  • Repair and maintain the Vessel and fishing gear during the season.

  • Supervise, direct, and schedule fishing trips and operations.

  • Supervise, direct, train, and discipline the crew.

  • Supervise fishing operations, ensuring proper operation and direction of the Vessel and fishing activities at all times.

  • Maintain a safe worksite, including on the Vessel, dockside, and during all fishing operations.

  • Ensure the Vessel, all gear, and fishing equipment are seaworthy and in working condition.

  • Properly care for and unload the catch.

  • Maintain, complete, and file all required logs, paperwork, landing slips, purchase sales slips for landed quota and bait, dockside reports, etc., in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Prepare the Vessel, all gear, and fishing equipment for any seasonal layups (if applicable).

  • Ensure the Vessel is properly winterized (if applicable).

  • Promptly note and report any problems with the Vessel, gear, or equipment to the Fisheries Manager.

  • Conduct an inventory of all gear and equipment at the end of the season and provide a copy to the Fisheries Manager.

  • Routinely communicate with the Fisheries Manager, reporting all matters, including any repairs or issues, as soon as possible.

  • Schedule fishing trips for the crew based on industry standards, including working on Saturdays and Sundays.


 


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES



  • Must be a We’koqma’q Community member.

  • Minimum 1 year experience as a Lobster Boat Captain.

  • A valid Class 4 or SVOP (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency) license is required.

  • Hold valid Marine First Aid certificate.

  • Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license.

  • Strong understanding of operation of a fishing vessel  

  • High school diploma or an equivalent is required.

  • Prior experience/knowledge of fisheries and small water vessels.

  • Strong communication skills are essential. Should be able to convey information clearly and work well with coworkers and the general public.

  • Ability to remain calm and in control during tense situations is crucial.

  • Skilled at resolving conflicts and finding solutions.
