Job Description

WHAT'S THE JOB?

Working under the guidance of the Maintenance Technician and Maintenance Supervisor, this role

involves performing general labour, snow removal, furniture assembly, room setups, water station

upkeep, groundskeeping, minor repairs, and material handling. The Labourer helps maintain clean,

safe, and operational facilities by following WHMIS, PPE, and site safety procedures and by

collaborating with housekeeping, kitchen, and logistics teams.



This position requires fly-in/fly-out travel from Edmonton, Alberta or Yellowknife, Northwest

Territories, to the project site in Nunavut, with potential for weather-related delays or logistical

challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist Maintenance Technicians with routine inspections, preventive maintenance tasks, and minor repairs (e.g., replacing filters, lamps, and basic fixtures).
  • Perform snow and ice removal around walkways, entrances, emergency exits, and utility access using shovels, snow blowers, and ice‑melt products; place caution signage as required.
  • Assemble, move, and set up furniture, bunk frames, and common‑area layouts; support room turnovers and seasonal changeovers.
  • Service and restock potable water stations and eyewash/wash stations as directed; maintain cleanliness and spill control in these areas.
  • Complete groundskeeping duties: litter pickup, sweeping, power‑washing, minor landscaping, and exterior cleanup.
  • Support waste and recycling handling; transport materials safely to designated areas; keep dumpster and waste enclosures tidy.
  • Load, unload, and move materials and supplies; operate carts, dollies, or pallet jacks as trained.
  • Conduct basic facility checks and promptly report hazards, leaks, temperature issues, or equipment concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Set up and tear down for projects and camp activities; assist with signage, barricades, and safety cones.
  • Use hand and power tools safely; maintain tools and work areas in clean, organized condition.
  • Follow all site safety practices, including WHMIS, hazard assessments, PPE, and safe work procedures; participate in toolbox talks and JSAs.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Complete daily Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs) and Pre-Task Hazard Analyses.
  • Ensure compliance with CSA, provincial/territorial codes, and occupational health and
  • safety regulations.
  • Participate in safety meetings, drills, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and follow all company and client safety protocols.

Physical Demands:

  • Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Climb ladders and stairs.
  • Stand, walk, squat, kneel or sit according to task for extended lengths of time.
  • Perform repetitive hand work requiring full use of both hands.
  • Work with arms above shoulder height.

Working Conditions:

  • Fly-in/fly-out position based in a remote Arctic camp, with potential for weather-related
  • travel delays.
  • Shared accommodations and meals provided while on site.
  • Extended periods away from home on rotation.
  • Physically demanding work environment with long shifts.
  • Must comply with all health, safety, and sanitation standards established by the client and
  • Dexterra Group.

Qualifications

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1–3 years of experience as a labourer, maintenance helper, or facilities support (remote
  • camp or industrial/hospitality setting) is an asset.
  • WHMIS certification (or willingness to obtain prior to deployment.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR is an asset; additional safety tickets (e.g., Fall Protection, Confined
  • Space Awareness) are beneficial.
  • Ability to pass background checks and meet site medical/fitness requirements.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license considered for operating site vehicles/equipment as authorized.
  • Clean driver's abstract
  • Must be able to successfully pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving aptitude.
  • Cultural sensitivity working with Indigenous and multicultural teams.

Labourers work on a rotational schedule of 3 weeks on/ 3 weeks off.  Site location is in a remote camp setting, with individual cabin/arctic tent accommodations. You may be required to work nights, weekdays, weekends, and general holidays. Wages are paid on an hourly basis with a starting rate of $20.50/hour
