The Opportunity

The Language Supervisor is a key role, overseeing the logistics of the delivery and ongoing improvement of the LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) program at the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick. This position reports directly to the Manager of Language and Employment Programs, and side-by-side with LINC Instructors, the Language Program Advisor, and the Employment Programs Supervisor to ensure newcomer clients access English language teaching including related services such as external assessments, childcare, and other supports in a timely and effective manner. This position also sits on the Newcomer Connections leadership team and contributes to the overall vision and direction of the Newcomer Connections department.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with and support the work of the Language Program Advisor, the LINC Team Leads, the PBLA Lead, the Digital Skills Instructor, LINC Instructors and supply teachers;


• In collaboration with the Manager of Language and Employment Programs, establish, clearly communicate, monitor, and report on processes that serve to meet the objectives of the LINC Program and team requirements and Newcomer Connections priorities;


• Evaluate student portfolios to ensure national protocols are adhered to by teachers.


• Explore ways to enhance services to clients (identifying efficiencies, working with community agencies) while simultaneously working with other key departmental leaders to provide seamless client programming.


• Monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and assist with reporting to our funders.


• Implement and follow YMCA-SWNB Performance Management protocols including connecting with each team member in regularly scheduled 1:1 meetings, observing classes, and giving and receiving guidance.


• Keep up-to-date with theory, practice, sector trends, and policies as it relates to the work of settlement language training at the local, regional, national, and international levels;


• Participate in and/or deliver presentations at conferences, workshops and symposia;

Skills and qualification

• A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution. Masters preferred.


• A recognized TESL credential or equivalent


• 5 years ESL classroom experience in a variety of levels and skills


• 2 years management or supervisory experience


• Adept presenter with confident classroom delivery


• Exceptional oral and written communication skills


• Exceptional organizational and inter-personal skills


• Approachable, collaborative and possessing a strong client-centric attitude


• In depth knowledge of current language instructional resources and advanced user status of MS Office products


• Heightened sensitivity to the needs of our immigrant learners


• Relevant work or volunteering experience in a cross-cultural environment


• Must be fluent in the English language; knowledge of other languages is an asset.
