Job Description - Lead Biologist

Position Summary:


Wasauksing First Nation is accepting applications for a Lead Biologist. The Lead Biologist (Species at Risk) will be responsible for developing and implementing a long-term terrestrial species at risk monitoring program on Wasauksing First Nation. In addition to intensive fieldwork throughout the spring and summer seasons, including surveys for reptiles and amphibians on roadways, marshes, and remote areas in challenging terrains and weather conditions, the Lead Biologist will organize all research data, perform extensive data analysis, assist with ArcGIS data collection, retention and mapping, and write proposals and final reports. The Lead Biologist will provide technical assistance and recommendations to the Lands and Resources team within the Public Works Department.


 


Job Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Develop, implement, and lead field studies focusing on species-at-risk surveys, habitat assessments, and species-at-risk monitoring initiatives.

  • Manage, organize, analyze, and interpret all data collected through datasheets and spreadsheets for accurate calculations of population sizes and overall species health to inform environmental assessments, impact evaluations, and land use decisions.

  • Analyze spatial data with ArcGIS and other Esri Canada applications.

  • Prepare and submit the necessary permit and funding applications, reporting requirements, safe handling protocols, survey and research procedures, and annual work plans in compliance with Wasauksing First Nation laws, policies, traditional customs and the federal environmental requirements.

  • Coordinate and organize information sessions and events for community members (e.g., presentations, outreach, etc.).

  • Support the Lands and Resources team with technical reviews and provide recommendations.

  • Attend all Council meetings, general community meetings/gatherings, and other meetings as required and as assigned, within and outside the community.

  • Be familiar with and adhere to the Wasauksing First Nation Human policies and procedures.

  • Attend appropriate workshops, seminars, and training sessions as required and as assigned to remain current and up to date on topics of concern to the work assignments for the position.

  • Liaise with other First Nations, program agencies, and related organizations/institutions.

  • Prepare monthly and annual reports and statistics.

  • Develop a yearly work plan and prepare budget submissions.

  • Conduct research, compile data, and prepare reports for consideration and presentation to the Lands and Resources Committee’s recommendations and Council’s review and approval.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of Wasauksing First Nation and any other relevant policies and procedures from external agencies and partners



Education & Experience:



  • University degree in biological sciences or related discipline.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in applied fieldwork and conservation required; knowledge of Ontario reptiles and amphibians, ecological principles etc.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in handling reptiles, including venomous reptile training.

  • Experience working with geographical information systems and Esri Canada platforms.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret spatial data.

  • Strong knowledge of safety standards and protocols in fieldwork.

  • Demonstrated experience in writing proposals, work plans, and technical reports.

  • Proven experience in developing study designs, leading and coordinating projects, managing teams, and mentoring staff.

  • First Aid/CPR certifications are considered assets.



Other Requirements: 



  • Ability to work independently & with minimal supervision; Time management.

  • Valid Driver's License and reliable personal vehicle.

  • Willing to work flexible hours as required, including evenings and weekends.

  • This position requires the individual to work with various families, youth and children. To protect children, youth and vulnerable persons, Wasauksing First Nation requires the individual to provide a vulnerable sector or criminal record check.
