We are currently seeking a Lead Engineer, Electrical, to join our Streetcar Overhead Engineering team!
This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing a unified mechanism and process for peer reviews of engineering designs and design standards related to Traction Power, Signaling Systems and Power Distribution Infrastructure. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring peer review of design and design standards are conducted according to industry standards and best practices. In addition, the incumbent will serve as the lead for streetcar electrical improvement projects including the surface track switch controller upgrade program.
As the Lead Engineer, Electrical, you will report to the Manager, Overhead Engineering and play a key role in overseeing and evaluating peer reviews, design approaches, and technical submissions across various projects. In this role, you will help bring consistency to the section’s review processes, ensure alignment with TTC design standards, and coordinate with other design groups, stakeholders, and external consultants. You will also support the identification and development of new design standards where required.
In this position, you will prepare electrical engineering designs for transit structures and provide indirect supervision to team members within the section. You will be responsible for preparing electrical drawings and specifications for contract documents, directing and reviewing the work of external consultants, and supervising the production of Standard and Directive Drawings. You will also support permit and bid processes, conduct field and shop drawing reviews, and take professional responsibility for designs in accordance with Professional Engineers Ontario requirements.
As the Lead Engineer, Electrical, you will represent the section in meetings with internal and external stakeholders, review developer design submissions, conduct peer reviews of engineering work, and lead programs that involve organizing and advising Senior and Design Engineers assigned to various projects.
In this role you will perform and supervise electrical engineering design for the streetcar overhead system. This includes marking up drawings and specifications, stamping drawings for tender and construction, and supporting all phases of construction. You will establish system concepts, develop best practices for analysis and design, assign and guide design tasks, and validate engineering calculations to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards such as the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, National Building Code of Canada, Ontario Building Code, TTC Design Manual, NFPA 130, and IEEE standards. You will also prepare project‑specific electrical and power specifications, coordinate interdisciplinary design requirements, and ensure recommended design changes are consistently incorporated into drawings and specifications.
In addition, you will supervise and prepare technical inputs for addenda and contract change documentation, review shop drawings, and perform safe field reviews during construction.
You will also review electrical engineering designs and documents prepared by external consultants. This includes identifying the need for external engineering resources, preparing documentation for consultant assignments, establishing work plan requirements, verifying completeness of deliverables, and recommending sign‑off for tender and construction. You will initiate contract changes within your authority, take corrective action when work does not meet standards or milestones, consult with external designers during construction review, and review and assess payment certificates.
