Position Title: Lead Heli-Ski Guide

Terms of Employment: Full-time, Seasonal


Language of Work: English required, additional languages an asset


Wage: $405.00 - $500.00 per day, based on certifications and experience


Reports To: Area Manager and Assistant Area Manager(s)


FLSA Status: Non-Exempt


Date of Last Review: June 20, 2022


Desired Start Date: November 20, 2022


 


Position Overview


As a certified Ski or Mountain Guide, you will be responsible for guiding clients through the mountains while managing hazards and risk for CMH, our guests, and our staff. In addition to this, you will be held accountable to provide an exceptional guest experience in the field and at various CMH facilities. You will be responsible for assisting with the supervision, training, and mentoring of our Apprentice Ski Guides to ensure that they demonstrate effective risk management while meeting expectations surrounding the guest experience. Working as a cohesive team, you will be expected to train and mentor less experienced guides with all guiding related skills, as well as helping to manage and lead the day-to-day ski program(s).


 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Manage conduct in the mountains for yourself and all people entrusted to your care in a manner that minimizes risk while maximizing the guest experience

  • Organize, lead, and help to manage the heli-ski and ski touring programs

  • Take an active role in facilitating and leading guides’ meetings

  • Clear ability to exercise sound risk management skills with safe decision making

  • Be respectful, friendly, and courteous interacting with all guests. Ensure their safety, comfort, and enjoyment on and off the hill. Be sensitive to individual needs while respecting personal space and learning needs

  • Demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork skills involved with guiding, aviation, management, and all CMH staff

  • Assist with the supervising, training, and mentoring of Ski Guides and Apprentice Ski Guides

  • Develop interpersonal and language skills to communicate effectively with guests and other guides. Give clear instructions at the appropriate time and use supplementary skills to host and entertain where appropriate

  • Be physically fit and mentally well prepared to be able to effectively perform the duties of a guide

  • Come prepared for meetings to provide knowledgeable, appropriate, and focused feedback to help the guiding team analyze and effectively manage hazards and risk, and to provide a suitable and enjoyable ski program. Exercise authority, at any time, to veto any decision which, in your judgment, may compromise safety

  • Provide coaching to staff and guests, as needed

  • Familiarize yourself with the terrain by asking questions during guide meetings and by studying both winter and summer run photos

  • Have a thorough working knowledge and competence in all technical systems associated with the operation. Participate in annual trainings to refresh and upgrade these skills

  • Be thoroughly familiar with all written CMH procedures and guidelines that govern the operation, and always act in accordance with them

  • Maintain, and where possible, upgrade your certifications with the professional associations and agencies relevant to the trade

  • Supply personal gear and mountain equipment as needed. Always carry the required safety equipment as outlined in the CMH Mountain Operations Manual. Maintain equipment as necessary to ensure functionality. Treat equipment issued to you with due care and return when requested


 


Minimum Qualifications



  • ACMG Ski or Snowboard guide, or IFMGA Mountain Guide, or CSGA Level 3

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Heli-Ski Guide

  • Level 2 Ski Instructor or equivalent, preferred

  • CAA Level 3, preferred

  • WCB Avalanche Control Blaster’s Certification, preferred

  • 2 years of experience as a Lead Heli-Ski Guide, preferred

  • Experience with ski programs that involve helicopters, preferred

  • Confidence to interact with all levels of the company in a hub-and-spoke model in which many employees are remote, as well as having the confidence to interact with guests from all backgrounds, joining us from around the world

  • Strong sense of work ethic and accountability, with an ability to function well in a team environment and focus on team success

  • A willingness to learn and develop skills with on-the-job training and mentoring


 


Working Conditions



  • Able to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position up to 40 pounds on a regular basis

  • Able to work in the outdoors for extended periods of time in varied conditions

  • Manual dexterity to operate a computer and other common office equipment on an occasional basis

  • This position is required to work on weekends and holidays, based on the needs of the business

  • This position is based at a remote site and shift work is required. A typical rotation is 2-weeks on and 1-week off

This position description is an overview of the scope of responsibilities for the role described above.  With the evolution of CMH, the responsibilities of this position may change, as may the details that are associated with many of the tasks. During these times of change, this position requires the flexibility and willingness to accept new responsibilities and potentially transfer others.


 


Compensation


A competitive daily rate will be provided, along with vacation pay. Further details will be discussed in a personal interview.
