Position Summary:
Reporting directly to the Shop Manager, the Lead Truck Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and efficient operation of trucks, trailers, and other vehicles. This role involves supervising a team of mechanics, technicians and/or apprentices while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and industry standards. The Lead Truck Mechanic manages preventive maintenance schedules, diagnoses and resolves mechanical issues, and maintains inventory levels for parts and tools. Additionally, this position plays a key role in enforcing safety protocols, coordinating with fleet and operations teams, and optimizing shop performance through cost control and process improvements. With a strong focus on problem-solving, and quality assurance, the Lead Truck Mechanic ensures that all equipment remains in peak operational condition to support business needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Team Management:
- Supervise mechanics, technicians and/or apprentices assigned to the Truck shop.
- Delegate tasks and prioritize work orders based on operational needs and deadlines.
- Conduct regular team meetings to discuss safety, updates, and workflow.
- Maintenance and Repair Oversight:
- Plan, schedule, and oversee the maintenance and repair of trucks, trailers, and other vehicles, including triage of repairs to be done based on criticality of specific equipment (i.e. impact on client delivery, production or revenue).
- Ensure preventive maintenance schedules are adhered to and documented.
- Diagnose mechanical and technical issues, providing guidance to mechanics as needed.
- Inventory and Parts Management:
- Maintain inventory levels of parts, tools, and supplies to minimize downtime.
- Coordinate with suppliers and vendors to procure parts and equipment as needed.
- Ensure tools and equipment are in proper working condition and calibrated when required.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Enforce company and industry safety protocols in the shop.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Train staff on safe work practices and proper equipment use.
- Administrative Duties:
- Create and manage work orders, ensuring accurate and detailed records of repairs and maintenance.
- Track and report on shop performance metrics, including turnaround times and budget adherence.
- Monitor labour hours and approve timesheets for shop employees.
- Communication and Coordination:
- Liaise with operations and fleet managers to align shop priorities with business needs.
- Coordinate with supervisors of drivers and operators to schedule equipment maintenance or repairs with minimal disruption.
- Act as the point of contact for external vendors and service providers.
- Problem Solving and Quality Assurance:
- Address mechanical issues that arise unexpectedly, ensuring timely resolution.
- Review completed work to ensure quality and safety standards are met.
- Investigate recurring issues or failures to determine root causes and implement solutions.
- Budgeting and Cost Control:
- Work with Shop Manger to ensure budget for parts, labour, and supplies are in order.
- Identify opportunities to reduce costs without compromising safety or quality.
- Training and Development:
- Train and mentor mechanics and apprentices, helping them develop their skills.
- Stay updated on new technologies and techniques in trucking and heavy equipment maintenance.
- Emergency Response:
- Be available to respond to equipment breakdowns or emergencies, including after-hours situations if required.
- Coordinate with field teams for on-site repairs when necessary.
Requirements:
- Certified 310T Preferred. 421A also considered with appropriate experience.
- Class 1 License a significant asset.
- Previous experience in a similar role, preferably in trucking or heavy equipment maintenance.
- Strong mechanical knowledge of diesel engines (including emissions), hydraulics, electrical systems.
- Team management skills.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in both written and verbal English, with the ability to undertake moderately complex technical correspondence and conversations, as well as to provide clear direction to team members.
- Ability to review and interpret technical specifications and manuals.
- Adept at multi-tasking and prioritizing in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, working well under pressure and meeting deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as well as attention to detail.
Work Environment:
- Primarily shop-based but may require field visits to inspect equipment or manage repairs.
- May involve exposure to loud noises, heavy machinery, and outdoor weather conditions.
- Periods of standing, bending, kneeling, laying under equipment and transitioning between positions while preforming repairs and maintenance.
- Periodic lifting and carrying of parts and pieces weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Overtime will be required during construction season from May through October.
