About the Newcomer Centre

We believe every newcomer to Edmonton should have the chance to succeed and feel at home. That means creating support that is fair, welcoming, and meets people’s needs at every stage of their journey. We help newcomers build the skills, connections, and confidence they need to live well, take part in their community, and enjoy everything Edmonton has to offer.

Since 1981, we’ve supported people from over 100 countries. Each year, we offer services to newcomers of all ages, including refugees, immigrants, refugee claimants, and citizens.

We are guided by the values of Interconnectedness, Empowerment, Compassion, and Accountability. We believe in treating everyone with dignity and work together to help newcomers grow, connect, and thrive.

About the Role

The Learner Support Specialist works as part of the Newcomers Essential Skills Training (NEST) Program, a workplace-focused learning experience for adult newcomers. You will support learners one-on-one to identify their goals, navigate challenges, and stay engaged in the program.

This is a hands-on, people-facing role. You follow clear program processes to provide personalized support, help learners access services, and track progress. You work closely with instructors and the program team and bring strong organization, compassion, and a calm, welcoming approach to every interaction.

What You’ll Do

One-on-One Support

  • Meet with learners to understand their needs, goals, and strengths

  • Create learning plans using program tools and guidelines

  • Help learners complete forms and access available financial supports

  • Offer guidance on study skills, time management, and program expectations

  • Support learners facing language barriers, stress, or unfamiliar systems

Teamwork and Coordination

  • Work closely with instructors and team members to support learner success

  • Refer learners to tutoring, mentoring, or accommodations based on program guidelines

  • Share learner updates with the team and flag concerns needing further support

Finding and Sharing Resources

  • Stay informed about community programs and learner supports

  • Guide learners to services such as settlement support or mental health referrals

  • Help learners understand next steps and how to access what they need

Program Support and Engagement

  • Support the delivery of group workshops led by the program team

  • Gather learner feedback and pass it along to help improve services

  • Help create a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment

Tracking and Follow-Up

  • Keep clear, up-to-date records of learner meetings and outcomes

  • Enter data into program tracking tools accurately and on time

  • Support reporting by sharing key learner progress information with the team

What You Bring

We value both formal education and lived or work experience. You may have a diploma or certificate in Administration, Education, Human Services, or a related field — or you may bring strong skills built through community work, volunteering, or previous roles.

You are:

  • Good at listening, building trust, and offering encouragement

  • Comfortable working with people from diverse cultures and experiences

  • Organized and reliable, with strong time management skills

  • Skilled in using tools like Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and databases

  • Open to learning, teamwork, and feedback from others

It’s a bonus if you have:

  • Experience working with English language learners or adult students

  • Familiarity with learner accommodations or assistive tools

Our Commitment

The Newcomer Centre values Accountability, Compassion, Empowerment, and Interconnectedness in building an inclusive workplace. We invest in talent development, leadership growth, and diverse recruitment to foster a thriving team. By embracing different backgrounds and experiences, we create a high-performing, rewarding, and welcoming environment for all.
