POSITION OVERVIEW

The Legal Counsel, Employment Law, supports the Assistant Vice President, Legal Affairs by handling all legal matters related to employment law at BDC. The incumbent provides high quality legal services and advice to internal partners of Human Resources team.

CHALLENGES TO BE MET

Work with Human Resources teams to provide clear, practical, and timely legal advice on regulatory requirements specific to employee relations and human resources programs and practices.

Analyze, interpret, draft, revise and negotiate various types of human resources documents.

Manage employee litigation, providing recommendations and sound, in-depth analysis of legal risks.

Manage relations with external legal advisors.

Writes legal opinions and conducts research on the interpretation and application of federal statutes related to employment law, including the Canada Labor Code.

Collaborate in the drafting of various internal governance documents.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

University degree in law

Between 8- and 10-years’ relevant experience in employment law in-house or in private practice.

In-depth knowledge of the Canada Labor Code would be considered an asset.

Experience pleading before administrative tribunals will be considered an asset.

Member of the Quebec Bar or equivalent from any Canadian province.

Highly collaborative and strong interpersonal skills.

Able to quickly gain credibility with business partners.

Be proactive in your work environment.

Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills.

Bilingualism in speaking and writing (English and French).
