Job Description - Legal Counsel LEAP

Location: Toronto, ON Canada

Type: Permanent Full-time

Group/Grade: Bargaining Unit/Litigator Grade

Rate: $ 122,380.57 (start)

Date: February 13, 2026

ONA is seeking to hire a Legal Counsel (Labour Relations Officer) for our Legal Expense Assistance Plan (LEAP) team at our Toronto office. The successful candidate will administer and deliver the plan in the representation of ONA members at Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) tribunals, health matters, and coroners’ inquests in a quality-conscious and cost-effective manner to the LEAP team.

 

This is what else you can expect from this dynamic role:



  • Represents ONA members in RHPA Tribunal cases.

  • Writes detailed, persuasive submissions for ONA members regarding various regulatory college matters.

  • Provides counseling and advice to ONA members through the LEAP Intake Line.

  • Assists members to understand and reflect upon regulatory college standards and their own accountabilities as health-care professionals.

  • Attends meetings at the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) representing members.

  • Supports and advises members who enter the Nurses’ Health Program

  • Identifies trends that may impact the provision of LEAP, expanding knowledge/expertise on allied health and other regulated professions.

  • Provides written and oral representation in Judicial Reviews

  • Participates on the LEAP Advisory Committee, as required.

  • Assists in membership education and communications with respect to LEAP.

  • Reviews and analyzes relevant legislation.

  • Expands knowledge/expertise on allied health and other regulated professions

  • Consults with senior legal counsel when necessary to ensure members’ rights are protected.

  • Participates in team meetings and connects, sharing information and expertise with team.

  • Communicates with other ONA teams when appropriate to ensure members receive adequate representation with respect to all workplace issues.

  • Uses ONA database to record and search for case information.



What we are looking for:

The successful candidate will possess -



  • LL.B or Juris Doctor (JD) is required.

  • Membership in the Law Society Ontario required.

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of related experience including experience litigating (or equivalent combination of education and experience satisfactory to ONA).

  • RN designation considered an asset.



  • Comprehensive understanding of College of Nurses practice standards.

  • Familiarity with the Regulated Health Professions Act and Nursing Act. Familiarity and knowledge with respect to nursing practice and legal issues.

  • Experience providing written and oral advocacy at professional regulatory tribunals a significant asset.



  • Superior communication skills, both verbal and written; demonstrated ability to write logical, persuasive, detailed submissions.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to show empathy and patience while providing counseling and advice to members.

  • The successful candidate must be flexible, adaptable and able to work well with others in a rapidly changing work environment.

  • Must have demonstrated advocacy and an "activist's heart."

  • Adept in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, Windows and have a basic knowledge of database application.

  • Ability to speak other languages is considered an asset.
