The Nova Scotia Museum, consisting of 28 museum sites, is the most decentralized museum in Canada. It is also one of the oldest provincial museums in the country. The Nova Scotia Museum is responsible for the provincial collection of over one million artifacts and specimens housed at museum sites and storage facilities across the province.
The Manager of the Rural Sites oversees operations at the 25 rural sites of the Nova Scotia Museum. This includes directly supervising staff at the 8 Directly-Managed Nova Scotia Museum sites (Balmoral Grist Mill, Sutherland Steam Mill, Lawrence House Museum, Fisherman’s Life Museum, Clifton Museum Park, Shand House Museum, Prescott House Museum and Uniacke Estate Museum Park) and oversight of HR and financial management. Additionally, the Manager of Rural Sites is responsible for setting operational standards for the 17 locally-managed rural Nova Scotia Museum sites and acting as a liaison between local management staff and boards and the Nova Scotia Museum.
The Manager assumes a lead role in enhancing all aspects of museum operations, including visitor services, interpretation, collections and infrastructure. The Manager works in collaboration with Archives, Museums and Libraries staff to ensure the rural museums’ goals align with those of the broader department, and to ensure that the museums represent the broader Nova Scotia Museum mandate.
The Manager works collaboratively across the Nova Scotia Museum system, Archives, Museum and Libraries and the Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage, as well as across government and with various stakeholders and sectors to build collaborative relationships and innovate.
The Manager of Rural Sites reports to the Director, Nova Scotia Museum
To be successful in this role you have a University degree in a relevant discipline combined with 7 years of related work experience. You also have knowledge and experience in museum management best practices and the demonstrated ability to clearly communicate museum-related issues to diverse audiences, this should be clearly demonstrated in your cover letter and resume.
Political and museum acumen is required.
You have strong interpersonal skills, and the demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate a large team of specialists,while valuing a diverse, and inclusive work environment. You demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills and have a proven ability to be innovative, lead and execute,addressing issues and demands with diplomacy and tact. You havetime management skills to successfully develop and manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines. You can develop and maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and have demonstrated skills in maintaining these relationships on interpretation and building maintenance projects.
You have demonstrated organizational leadership experience, including experience in human resource and financial management, and business planning and strategic development.
Success in this role includes being innovative and having a broad way of thinking, while staying current with respect to broader impacts (current events, legislative changes and national trends) and is diligent on how opinions and perspectives effect stakeholders and partners regarding collection issues.

This individual will have to travel throughout the province of Nova Scotia and will be required to have a valid drivers license.
Pay Grade: EC 12
Salary Range: $3,351.92- $4,608.93Bi-Weekly
